On the disease resistant table grape cv. Moldova, wide spread in the North Kaukasus region, the
influence of different systems of irrigation was studied during 1986-90: furrow irrigation, drip,
minisprinklers, drip + minisprinklers, furrow + minisprinklers. The soil was moistened up to 70-80
% of field capacity. Irrigation increased berry size and cluster weight especially with drip irrigation
and drip + minisprinklers. Both of these systems increased the number of fruiting canes in the

Rooting of cuttings of 9 table and 4 wine grape cvs was tested in water and in gravilene bricks. A
part of the cuttings was treated with 0.2 % IAA solution for 3-4 s before rooting. After 17-24 d
significant differences in rhizogenic activity (RA) were found: highest RA was found in cvs
Suruchenskii belyi, Frumoasa albe and Srebrostroui, middle RA in Kodryanka, and poor RA
showed Vostorg, Original, Pamyat'Negrulya, V-45-23, Bianka, Viorika and Rosinha. IAA
application was highly effective with very high, high and middle RA cvs and showed little effect in
cvs with poor RA. IAA application was more effective with cuttings firstly rooted in water than with

Estimation of the grape harvest is normally based on 2 crop coefficients: the average number of
Kurzfassung: inflorescences of fertile shoots and the average number of inflorescences per vine using the
microscropic method of counting initial inflorescences of 10 winter buds. The new method
presented introduces a 3rd parameter, the coefficient of productivity: average number of
inflorescences of 10 winter buds on the cane (frozen or damaged buds excluded). The optimal
pruning length of canes corresponds to the (cv. specific) coefficient, the demanded grape yield/ha
and the number of vines/ha. Based on the data of 7 cvs a formula is given for calculating the

Bei Pfropfreben mit einer Huelle aus weisser Polyaethylenfolie um die Pfropfstelle war die
Kallusbildung um 52oe gegenueber der Kontrolle gesteigert, und die Kalli waren gleichmaessiger
und kompakter; mit grauer PVC-Folie wurden aehnliche Ergebnisse erzielt. Bei den mit
Polyaethylen behandelten Pfropfreben betrug (nach Stratifikation im Wasser) die Ausbeute an
erstklassiger Ware 83,35oe. Im Kallus war die Katalase-Aktivitaet gesteigert, die Trockenmasse
verdoppelt und die Pigmentbildung verzehnfacht.(Misolavljevic, M.; Zemun)
In grafted vines with a sheath of white polyethylene foil around the graft site, callus formation was
52% higher compared with the control, and the calluses were more uniform and compact; similar
results were obtained with grey PVC foil. With the grafted vines treated with polyethylene, the yield
of first class material was 88.35% (after stratification in water). In the callus the catalase activity
was raised, the dry mass was doubled, and the pigment formation was increased tenfold.(Misolavljevic, M.; Zemun)

The study has been carried out during 1995-97 on the basis of Kuban State University grapevine
Kurzfassung: collection which has been established by the method of green grafting on 5 BB rootstock seedlings.
The plants were trained on vertical trellis as one-sided, long-branched vines; 3 m x 2 m spacing:
cvs Bianca, Gm 318-57, Gm 322-58, Gechei zamatosh', Riton, Srebrostrui, EN-9 and EN-10.
Embryonal fruitfulness of dormant main buds has been assessed by microscopy in October (10
vines of each cv. were cut). Actual fruitfulness has been recognized by agrobiological calculation
methods. The average fruitfulness index (FI) varied from 1.1 to 1.75 suggesting the probability of
high yield (minimal values with Bianca, EN-10, Gm 322-58 and maximal values with Riton, Gm
318-57). Minimal FI values have been observed on the first node of annual shoots (0.62-0.64),

On the table grape cvs Vostorg, Kodrjanka, Frumuosa albe, Lyana, Strashenskii, Surutschenkii
belyi, Moldova, Pamyati Negulya, trained on vertical trellis and covered in winter with soil by
ploughing, the embryonal fruitfulness of each bud on the cane was determined. In the years with
low sunshine the embryonal fruitfulness was more negatively influenced in Frunoasa albe (-52 %),
Pamyati Negrulya (-47 %) and Vostorg (-37 %). If the load of the buds per vine was low, the
laterals were allowed to develop. The buds of laterals on all named cvs bear grapes. [AZ 416] (V.

Effects of different methods of stratification and manual and machine grafting techniques on take
success and yield of rootings were studied. Higher rhizogenic activity and yield of rootings were
observed in cuttings grafted on Kober 5BB and stratified on sawdust with local heating and on
perlite compared to the stratification on water. Improved manual grafting by slanting cross-sections
led to weak take of the graft components because of the manual fixation of the nail in cuttings with
high percentage of pith (Kober 5BB). Machine grafting by making stepped cuts was inferior in the
quality of take to improved manual grafting of slanting cross-sections. Machine grafting by making

Cane length and crop yield of table grape cv. Moldova on Kober 5 BB was pruned on 60
buds/vine. Short pruning: 3-4 buds/cane (CP); middle: 6-8 buds (MLP); long: 10-12 (LP).
Percentages of fruiting shoots were 37, 43 and 43 % for CP, MLP and and LP, respectively and
number of grapes/vine 25.2, 28.7 and 29.8. Other grape parameters measured were: number of
berries/grape, cluster and berry weights, juice acid and sugar contents, grape yield and coefficient
of transportability. Average length of shoots (cm) was 215, 183 and 161, and mean diameter (mm)
9.3, 8.9 and 8.6, respectively. MLP proved to be the best pruning system for cv. Moldova. (V.

The planting material is divided in virus-tested clonal material for basic plantations, and non-tested
visually healthy clonal material. To obtain lots of buds in a short time it is proposed to plant ownrooted plants from short cuttings for a limited period in a field free of phylloxera and nematodes.
Planting distances 0.3 m x 3.0 m and head pruning with 3-4 shoots of 2 m length are
recommended. In the case of 1.75 m shoot length for certified material it is possible to yield

Based on 10 enzyme spectra obtained via electrophoretic separation of leaf proteins of 4
forms of the genera Ampelopsis and Parthenocissus, 17 *Vitis* spp., 136 *V. vinifera
sativa* cvs were established during the spectra of enzymes GP1, IDH, SOD, 6PGD and
LAP; 20 cvs of *V. vinifera pontica balcanica* Negr. and 15 indigenous cvs of the
Crimea were passportized and tested for genotype heterozygosis; the *V. vinifera sativa*
cvs studied were genetically differentiated into the West-European, East and
Mediterranean groups, the latter further subdivided into wine and table grapes, and clones
genetically different from the original cvs were revealed. The data obtained in
combination with those pertaining to phenotype viability and ampelographic traits of the
forms, cvs and clones studied were used to establish a basis of their phylogenetic

The evolution of the Kuban vineyards from 1898 up to 1996 is described. Many
ampelographic data have been collected and cvs studied. During 1962-65 the most
important wine grape cvs (Aligotй, Riesling, Sapravi, Sauvignon, Traminer) and table
grapes (Chasselas, Galan) were selected. 6 new Kuban and 31 foreign cvs were
introduced. The clonal selection was started with Riesling and 16 clones have been
studied in the collection of the Institute of Viticulture and Enology "Magarach". The
present Kuban viticulture is characterized by the cultivation of 25 wine, 20 table and 4
ambivalent grape cvs. The vineyard surface of Kunan decreased from >75,000 ha in 1961
(42.5 % of the total Russian area under vine) to <40,000 ha in 1996 (42.3 % of the present

Genetische Analyse der Merkmale in 45 Kreuzungskombinationen ergab folgende
Resultate: Kreuzungen von AeWAeW Reben spalten in der Nachkommenschaft im
Verhaeltnis 3 : 1, Kreuzungen des Typs AeW * AeW im Verhaeltnis 1 : 1. Es
werden Sorten angefuehrt, die einen heterozygoten Charakter des Geschlechtes
(Fnf) ausweisen. Als homozygot wird der Muskat Hamburg bezeichnet (FnFn).
Weibliche Sorten sind rezessiv homozygot (ff). Die weisse Beerenfarbe ist als
homozygot, die rote und schwarze als heterozygot zu betrachten. Weitere
Merkmale - Groesse und Form von Beeren und Trauben, Blattbehaarung, Blaettern
- sind polygen angelegt. Berechnet wurden auch Korrelationen zwischen den

genetic features are modified in different ways by the environment. The largest
genetically conditioned deviations were observed for acid content and berry and grape

Heterogeneous populations of the F1 generation of following V. vinifera hybrids were
analysed for inheritance of seedlessness of fruits: Magarach No. 10-51-1 *
Sverkhrannii Bessemyanyi Magaracha (Early Seedless of Magarach; I), Muscat
Hambourg * I, Ekim kara * Tarnau, Violett Muscat * Tarnau, and Madeleine
Anjevigne * Tarnau. Percentage of seedlessness varied from 6.2 % in Violett Muscat *
Tarnau to 42.8 % in Magarach No. 10-51-1 * I with the mean of 33.9 %. Correlation
analysis has proved an insignificant relationship between productivity and seedlessness
of berries, that is their independent inheritance. Hybrid forms with large seedless
berries, high yield and good quality were selected and they will be tested further under
the names Kishmish of Magarach and Bessemyannyi (seedless) of Magarach. (I.

Therefore, the relation between vital and letal seedlings was determined for 21 crosses and

A mathematical model was developed to evaluate the taxonomic usefulness of some

At the institute of viticulture 'Magarach' (Yalta) > 50 new complex-resistant table grape
Kurzfassung: cvs have been collected. Selection and evaluation of cvs with high resistance to diseases
and pests show these cvs being sensible to low temperature but of high reproductive
ability above-ground generative and vegetative parts. The authors stressed the following

and European grapevine spp. revealed species-specific antigens. Immunochemical

Kurzfassung: several hybrids and other cvs, and seedlings of Madeleine Angevine x Seyve Villard 12397 were used as experimental material. Explants (1-2 cm high apexes) were isolated
from green plants from the field, sterilized and washed 3-4 times in sterile water. From the
apexes ca. 1 mm leaf primordia were isolated and transferred onto filter-paper bridges in
solid agar medium or directly into 5 ml of liquid MS medium. After 20-30 d explants
were subcultured on medium with 0.5 mg/l benzyladenine. After 14 d 3-4 cm high shoots
with 6-10 buds were grown, and cut into 1-2 cm pieces with 1-2 nodes each. The cuttings
without leaves were transferred on fresh medium with 1.5 mg/l benzyladenine. For the
maximum proliferation, optimal concentrations of medium components (e.g., MgSO§4,
KH§2PO§4, cytokinins) need to be determined experimentally, but changing 0.5 and 1.5
mg/l of benzyladenine in the subcultures could be recommended. It was found in a full
multifactorial experiment that for proliferation of axillary buds in liquid medium 5.5 mg/l
pyridoxine, 5 mg/l nicotinic acid, and for shoot prolongation 5 mg/l pyridoxine and 5 mg/l
thiamine should be added. Before *ex vitro* transfer, indole-3-acetic acid (0.1 or 0.05
mg/l) and benzyladenine (0.05 mg/l) should be excluded from the medium. The other
medium components before transfer are important as well. Before transfer plantlets were
hardened by changing the aluminium foil for transparent foil coverings which enable
diffusion of water vapour, CO§2 and O§2 into/out off the vessels. Nevertheless, genotypic

Aims and achievements of grape breeding in Armenia, Moldavia and Crimea are
reviewed. First aims were producing frost resistant cvs for regions of continental climates
and pest and disease resistant cvs for humid zones and soils infested by phylloxera.
Selection achievements in Armenia and Crimea are discussed. A heterosis effect for frost
tolerance, and of 15-36 % to pathogens is claimed. Recent aims include breeding of
seedless cvs with muscat flavor, tolerant to frost and diseases. Crosses have been
performed between Armenian cvs showing resistance to frost and diseases and Crimean
cvs, resistant to phylloxera and diseases. Alternative breeding methods for hybridization

Reciprocal crosses were made between frost- and disease-resistant grapevine cvs released
Kurzfassung: by Armenian breeders and disease resistant new bred cvs of the Institute 'Magarach'. The
resulting population was studied and it was found that 50 % of the seedlings were
heterozygous for frost resistance and 15-36 % were resistant to all pathogens. Megrabuir
and Vardanank resisted frost of -28 °C due to a number of heterozygous characters,
yielded up to 30,000 kg/ha; cvs Arababer and Berkanush yielded up to 25,000 kg/ha. 9
cultivars (Amaras Muscat dvin, Muscat Nairi, etc.) were submitted to a competition trial.

Optimum media were developed using homogeneous explants of 4 genotypes (Kober 5
BB and 3 hybrids) and modified MS media. Effects of vitamins, CaCl2, MgSO4 on
proliferation of axillary buds in liquid media were studied as well as the interaction
between MgSO4 and KH2PO4. Results of shoot length, number of roots and root length
as affected by different solid and liquid media are given, showing better development of

Author dicusses the theoretical basis of grapevine breeding and demonstrates breeding
results in Russia. First he describes problems of registered genotypes. The new Russian
law about "breeding success" regulates grapevine collection activities and tasks in
accordance with the international organisations (UPOV, OIV etc.). Five new taxonomical
groups of the species *Vitis vinifera* L. were determined by Russian ampelographers: in
the eastern group convar. *orientalis* subconvar. *caspica* Negr. and convar.
*orientalis* subconvar. *antasiatica* Negr.; the var. *transcaucasica* Gram. et Trosh. and

At the Vine and Wine Institute Magarach 103 Bulgarian and 39 Greek cvs of *V. vinifera
sativa*, convar. *pontica*, subconvar. *balacanica* Negr. were studied. Data of 11

For the development of shoots from meristems and tbe proliferation of axial buds
Kurzfassung: grapevine genotypes require different optimum BA concentrations in the nutrient medium.
Concentrations of vitamins and CaCl2 in the medium play an important role for the
growth of meristems, proliferation of buds and shoot development. Furthermore there are
also differences in the optimum ratio of the MgSO4- and KH2PO4- concentrations. Plant
growth after replanting into *in vivo* conditions is also influenced by the composition of
the nutrient medium on which they were cultivated *in vitro*. Gas exchange between the
atmosphere in the cultivation glasses and the environment is influenced by the chosen
cover. The tendency of higher growing rates of certain genotypes in comparison to others
is not affected by specific adaptation regimes. [AZ 35] (Auth. abstract)

With 53 inter- and intraspecific grapevine crossings the type of inheritance of
Kurzfassung: different characteristics (leaf morphology, flower type, berry colour, seedlessness,
muscat aroma) was investigated. Many cultivars of interspecific origin (Antey
Magarachskiy, Doyna, Strasheskiy) are heterozygous and cultivars of intraspecific
origin (Rubinoviy Magaracha, Bastardo Magarachskiy, Mria, Izobilny) are
homozygous. Grapevine cvs Tavria, Novoukrainsky Ranniy, Mriya (intraspecific)
and Antey Magarachskiy, Spartanec Magaracha, Doyna, Moldova, Yubiley
Moldavii (intraspecific) have most of all dominant alleles. Grapevine cvs Bastardo
Magarachskiy, Dalita, Sverkhranniy Bessemiyaniy Magaracha, Cremskaya
jemchujina (intraspecific origin) and Podarok Magaracha, Pervenec Magaracha,
Riesling Magaracha, Lanka have most of all recessive alleles. The received
information on genotypes may be used for establishing a genetic base of selection

The Manual provides characteristics and color pictures of the three classification
groups of grape cultivars: recommended (recognized) cultivars - those included into
the State Register of the Achievements of Breeding to be used for commercial
cultivation throughout the North Caucasus; authorized cultivars - those currently
under trial within the framework of the State Comission of the Russian Federation
for Cultivars and propagated; temporarily authorized cultivars - those introduced
and modern successful selections. The cultivars covered by the Manual are
cultivated in the South of Russia, possess economic traits and enter as valuable gene
sources (212 color pictures). The Manual is recommended by the Department of
Personal Policy and Education of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian
Federation for students of higher educational institutions specializing in the line of
