produce. Potential applications for this

Description: Jurgen Bey’s Kokon series
encloses traditional wooden furnishings
inside a tight wrapping of PVC, often
binding two or more objects into a new
whole. The natural interior is at once
concealed and objectified within its plastic
cocoon. Bey employs the spiderweb
technique, which is used in aircraft
construction to cover open parts.

Jürgen Bey traditionelle Holzmöbel mit

Ganzen zusammenfügt. In seinem PlastikKokon ist der natürliche Kern zugleich
verborgen und zum Objekt geworden.
Dabei bedient sich Bey des SpinnennetzVerfahrens, mit dem im Flugzeugbau
freiliegende Teile überzogen werden.

eignen sich für Prothesen ebenso wie für

Description: Apligraf is a cellular, bi-layer
living skin substitute. It is grown on a layer 12,7 x 12,7 x 2,54 cm
of collagen that is seeded with living
human skin cells, harvested from the
circumcised foreskin of an infant boy’s
penis. Thousands of skin grafts can be
grown from this single human harvest. The
product is shipped on a bed of nutrients
via normal FedEx and has a shelf life of five
days. Apligraf is used for the repair of
venous leg ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers,
which are common ailments. The sample
displayed here is a model only.
Description: Apligraf ist ein aus zwei
Schichten bestehender Zell-Ersatz für die
menschliche Haut. Er wird auf einer
Collagen-Schicht gezüchtet, auf die
lebende Hautzellen vom Menschen
aufgebracht werden. Diese Zellen werden
aus der beschnittenen Vorhaut eines
Jungen gewonnen. Aus einem einzigen
solchen Vorgang können Tausende von
Hauttransplantationen bestritten werden.
Auf einem Nährstoffpolster wird das
Produkt ganz normal mit FedEx verschickt,
die Haltbarkeit beträgt fünf Tage. Apligraf
wird für die Behandlung von venösen
Beingeschwüren sowie von
Fussgeschwüren bei Diabetikern
verwendet. Beides sind häufig
vorkommende Krankheiten. Das hier
dargestellte Muster ist allerdings nur ein

and flexible solar panel that is sewn to the
outer edge of the blanket. The flexible
solar panel powers the blanket's fiber
optic/Lycra blend fabric. At one end of the
bundled Luminex fibers are a set of white
LEDs that transmit light through the fiber
optics. The blanket glows and shimmers as
it is folded. In combination with luxurious
cashmere blends, the solar-powered
blanket is a conceptual embodiment of
solar warmth, illumination, and beauty.

thin-walled, translucent silicon tube that
contains all the technical components of
the fixture. The natural silicon casing
diffuses the bulb’s light and has inherent
irregularities. A process developed inhouse affords the industrially

degree of craftsmanship. The length of the
Jingzi suspension lamp can be individually
determined. The lamps are activated and
deactivated by touching the silicon casing.

Description: When used to manufacture
condoms or gloves, latex closely follows
the contours of the human body. Artist
and designer Matthieu Manche uses latex
to suggest, instead, an elaboration and
overflowing of the body. Pouches and
containers for new growths appear across
the surfaces of his clothing and furniture,
while tubes of latex link body parts and
entire bodies into new configurations.
Description: Wenn Latex für die
Herstellung von Kondomen oder
Handschuhen eingesetzt wird, schmiegt es
sich eng an die Formen des menschlichen
Körpers an. Der Künstler und Designer
Matthieu Manche verwendet Latex

bubbles, and seams from the molding
process. Rose Urn was made later from the
same mold, but from fresh, pink silicone.

chicken eggs. Cast in white porcelain, the

transformed. Yet the chemical aspects of
these materials’ production processes

full line of latex garments, with and
without built-in male or female condoms.
The female condom will not slip out while
in use and does not require an outer ring
to stay in place. Some pieces in the
Sensate line are pure fashion (such as
tops, gloves and stockings). The garments
are made by dipping a mold (called a
mandrel) into liquid latex. A single mold
can be used to create garments with
different cuts, such as bikinis and briefs.

lassen sich verschiedene Schnitte wie

New York, one of the most reknowned

Gaetano Pesce to produce a range of
chairs. This end he came up with an
experimental series of nine chairs, with
which he probed the boundaries of art
and design as well as the limitations of the
material polyurethane in varying degrees
of thickness. The series kicks off with a
chair whose material is so soft that it
cannot even support its own weight.
Thanks to its robutness the final chair in
the series is the only one that can be put
to any practical use.
Description: 1983 beauftragte das New
Yorker Pratt Institute, eine der
renommiertesten Designhochschulen,
Gaetano Pesce mit einem neuen
Stuhlentwurf. Es entstand eine
experimentelle Serie von neun Stühlen, mit
denen die Grenzen zwischen Kunst und
Design und zugleich die Grenzen des
Werkstoffs Polyurethan in seinen
verschiedenen Materialdichten ausgereizt
werden. Die Serie beginnt mit einem Stuhl,
dessen Material so weich ist, dass er sich
nicht einmal selber tragen kann. Der letzte
Stuhl ist aufgrund seiner Festigkeit das
einzig wirklich benutzbare Möbel der
Serie.

insulator, making it an appropriate
material for expeditions—to outer space
or the Arctic Circle—requiring lightweight
protection from the elements. Invented in
the 1930s, Aerogel was used to insulate
the Mars Pathfinder. To create this
hyperinsulated jacket, the Italian Grado
Zero Espace sewed small bags of
powdered Aerogel between two layers of
fabric, creating an extremely warm,
extremely lightweight coat.

miniaturized air conditioning system that

during the Cold War. It was designed to be 76,2 x 55,88 x 1,27 cm
fitted to the inside of combat clothing,
allowing soldiers to fight and survive
conditions of extreme heat—perhaps after
a nuclear blast. A similar system is used for
cooling astronaut’s suits. Fifty meters of 2
mm-wide plastic tubing are needed to
construct the internal cooling circuit of
Grado Zero Espace’s Cooling System
Jacket. The result is a beautifully crafted
surface with an astounding technical
capacity.
Description: Diese Jacke basiert auf einer
Miniatur-Klimaanlage, die von der USArmee während des Kalten Krieges in
Auftrag gegeben wurde. Sie wurde so
ausgelegt, dass sie unter der
Kampfkleidung getragen werden konnte.
Die Soldaten sollten auf diese Weise
zugleich kämpfen und in extremer Hitze
überleben können – möglicherweise nach
einer Atomexplosion. Mit einem ähnlichen
System werden auch die AstronautenAnzüge gekühlt. Für die interne Kühlung
der von Grado Zero Espace entwickelten
Kühljacke sind 50 Meter Plastikschlauch
mit 2 Millimeter Durchmesser nötig. Das
Ergebnis ist eine wunderschön gearbeitete

mountain climbers responds to
environmental conditions endured at
altitudes of 6000 metres and higher. The
jacket is extraordinarily light while
maintaining high thermal performance.
The external layer is water and wind
resistant yet breathable, while the inner
layer is thermally insulating. Padding as
well as flexible or reinforced fabrics are
integrated strategically throughout the
garment to account for the backpack load,
perspiration, humidity control, and more.
The glove is integrated with the sleeve,
preventing the loss of gloves during
strong winds. A central zip closure is
reserved for the climbers' rope.

Nemo II,
Description: Jeremiah Sullivan pioneered
the steel mesh shark suit in the early 1980s
to enable researchers and enthusiasts to
swim with sharks. The Nemo II and
Neptunic “C” suits are made of proprietary
fabrics that are light-weight and biteresistant. They are worn with a
submersible helmet and steel mesh gloves
and socks. Sullivan explains, “Interaction
with nature’s predators can be dangerous
business, and no suit can protect a fool
from himself. The shark suit was designed
to provide man with the opportunity to
more safely interact with the sea and all its
spectacular inhabitants.”

Description:
Swatch’s Skin Collection features an
extremely thin watch mechanism housed
in a variety of faces with coordinating
bands in diverse materials. Some of the
watches feature translucent plastic that
reveals the internal mechanism as well as
the skin of the wearer. Others use metal,
rubber, or vinyl in designs that recall
traditional jewelry styles in a stylized,
technology-inflected manner. Swatch’s
Skin Collection treats the watch both as
functional jewelry and as expressive
fashion accessory.
Description: Bei der Swatch Skin Selection
liegt ein extrem flaches Uhrwerk in einem
jeweils unterschiedlichen Gehäuse mit
passendem Armband aus verschiedenen
Materialien. Bei einigen Modellen kommt
transluzenter Kunststoff zum Einsatz, der

group realities:united transformed the
curved blue envelope of the Kunsthaus
Graz (designed by Peter Cook and Colin

media screen consisting of 930 ringshaped flourescent lights installed inside
the building’s translucent skin. A crude,
low-resolution image is made by dimming
the lights to varying degrees. The images
appear to pulse from within the body of
the building.

geschwungene blaue Aussenhaut des
Kunsthauses Graz (entworfen von Peter

Description: The panels were created for
use in a Manhattan apartment to filter
light and provide shifting views. Changes
CNC-gefrästes MDF
in the perforations of the panel occur in a
three-dimensional way, creating a complex 48 x 96 x 1 inches
skin with fluctuating transparency. Areas
of greater openness favor views from
specific orientations in the apartment. A
computer-controlled three-axis router is
used to create patterns on medium
density fiberboard. The designers created
numerous small-scale study models, using
equipment in their own studio, to develop
the final patterning.
Description: Die Platten wurden für ein
Appartment in Manhattan entworfen, um
das Licht zu filtern und wechselnde
Blickwinkel zu schaffen. Die
dreidimensionale Perforation changiert, so
dass eine komplexe Haut mit
fluktuierender Transparenz entsteht. Die
offeneren Stellen begünstigen Blicke aus
bestimmten Richtungen innerhalb des
Appartments. Eine computergesteuerte
Drei-Achsen-Fräse schneidet die Muster in
eine Hartfaserplatte von mittlerer Dichte.
An zahlreichen kleinen Modellen haben
die Designer mit gegenständen aus ihrem
eigenen Atelier das endgültige LochMuster entwickelt.

Description: The lamp is made from layers Wellkarton, Leuchte

create a volume. Subtle variations in the

complex surface of varying opacity. ARO is
known for transforming simple materials
into expressive surfaces using digital
manufacturing technologies.
Description: Die Lampe besteht aus
mehreren Schichten Pappe, die mit dem
Laser ausgeschnitten und dann so
zusammengefügt wurden, dass ein
dreidimensionales Objekt entstand. Die
ausgeschnittenen Stellen variieren sowohl
in der Stärke als auch im Schnittwinkel, so
dass sich eine komplexe Oberfläche mit
unterschiedlicher Lichtdurchlässigkeit
ergibt. ARO ist dafür bekannt, einfache
Materialien mithilfe von digitalen
Herstellungstechnologien in

Description: Resi-Rise is a project for a
vertical urban environment, whose pod
units would be leased and constructed
more like cars than like traditional real
estate. The undulating shape of the
building makes use of the maximum
allowable zoning envelope; deformation
account for site influences such as views
and adjacencies. Resi-Rise uses
experimental materials such as plastics
that undergo molecular restructuring with
stress; smart glass that responds to light
and weather conditions; antibacterial
woven glass-fiber wall coverings; smart
interior walls that control climate; and
pultruded fiberglass-reinforced polymer
structural composites.
Description: Resi-Rise ist ein Projekt für
eine vertikale Stadt-Anlage, bestehend aus

Aufzüge im sozialen Wohnungsbau. Die
neuen Verkehrsflächen werden von 150
einzeln gestalteten vertikalen StahlTraversen getragen, die mit einer
halbtransparenten Edelstahlstruktur
verkleidet sind. Dank dieser vegetativ
geformten Traversen können die neuen
Aufzüge und Verkehrsflächen in die
vorhandene Beton-Struktur eingehängt
werden.

Description: These blankets by Hella
Jongerius are pieced together out of old
blankets. Their irregular surfaces speak of
skins that are not sleek and seamless but
aged and discontinuous.
The blankets are made with needlepunching, a machine technique that uses
hundreds of barbed needles to push up
and down through a base textile to
entangle fibers, creating a non-woven
fabric mat. This technique is commonly
employed in the making of carpets.
Jongerius has further embellished these
blankets with embroidery.

Description: Diese Decken von Hella
Jongerius sind aus alten Decken
zusammengesetzt. Ihre Oberflächen
gleichen Häuten, die nicht glatt und
makellos sind, sondern gealtert und
unregelmässig. Die Decken sind nach dem
Nadel-Prinzip entstanden, einer Technik,
bei der Hunderte von aufgerauhten
Nadeln durch den Stoff geführt werden
und in der stetigen Auf- und Abbewegung
die Fasern so miteinander verfilzen, dass
eine nicht gewebte und doch feste Matte
entsteht. Normalerweise wird diese
Technik in der Teppich-Herstellung
verwendet. Jongerius hat ihre Decken
darüberhinaus noch mit Stickereien
verziert.

Objects for Walls
Description: Maplex®, a material
traditionally used in industrial applications,
is made from compressed, unbleached
tree fibers. Designer Erika Hanson has
been working with the manufacturer of
Maplex® to develop new products and
applications for this strong, lightweight,
renewable material. Some grades of
Maplex® contain a high percentage of
post-industrial recycled fiber, and all
grades are 100% recyclable. For Second
Skin, Hanson has developed a system of
wall panels with slits through which light
emanates. She is interested in
transforming the traditional architectural
wall into a living, multifunctional surface.
Description: Maplex® ist ein Material, das
traditionell in der Industrie Verwendung
findet und aus gepressten, ungebleichten
Holzfasern besteht. Die Designerin Erika
Hanson hat zusammen mit dem Hersteller
von Maplex® neue Produkte und

Description: An infinite wall of panels
Industriefelz, Stahlniete,
comprised of 10 x 10 cm modules of
Mannequin
compressed industrial felt, nesting into
one another, layered and riveted into a
series of spiraling sculptural strands that
weave and spin vertically, spanning about
2 meters wide x 2 meters long. To one end
of the wall, a strand breaks away engaging
the mannequin in front of it by enveloping
its upper body. The mannequin is dressed
in a transparent but protective cloak,
designed using the remains from the
felted wall screen.
Description: Eine schier endlose Wand
aus 10 x 10 cm großen Platten, die aus
gepresstem Industrie-Filz bestehen. Diese
Module sind so übereinander geschichtet
und vernietet, daß sie sich zu
spiralenförmigen Strängen
zusammenfügen. Sie ergeben wogende
Skulpturen, die auf einer Fläche von 2 x 2
Metern in die Höhe ragen. An einem Ende
der Wand löst sich ein Strang aus der
Struktur und umschlingt den Oberkörper
des davorstehenden Mannequins. Das
Mädchen ist in einen zwar durchsichtigen,
aber trotzdem schützenden Mantel
gehüllt, der wiederum aus den Resten der
Filzwand-Produktion hergestellt wurde.

Description: Panelite provides both a
finished surface and a structural material.
The honeycomb core provides strength
and rigidity at a very low density; when
bonded to similarly light-weight facings,
every honeycomb cell wall acts like the
web of an I-beam, forming an extremely
strong, stiff, yet light-weight composite
panel that is both structure and skin,
requiring no additional finishing. This
translucent material, available in numerous
colors and textures, has numerous interior

Description: Panelite bietet einerseits eine
fertige Oberfläche und ist andererseits
selbst Struktur. Der Waben-Kern garantiert
Tragkraft und Festigkeit bei sehr geringer
Dichte. In Verbindung mit anderen
leichten Materialien verhalten sich die
Waben-Platten wie ein Geflecht aus HStrahlträgern und ergeben eine extrem
feste, steife und doch leichte Paneele, die
sowohl Struktur als auch Haut ist und
keinerlei weitere Bearbeitung mehr
erfordert. Dieses transluzente Material ist
in vielen Farben erhältlich und kann
sowohl innen als auch aussen eingesetzt
