Wächst in einem 500 Jahre alten Haus auf dem Mönchsberg auf. Nachbar: Peter Handke, häufiger Besucher: Wim Wenders Zum ersten Mal im Kino. Die Eltern erklären nach der Vorführung von „Bambi”, dass es nicht möglich ist, die Schauspieler hinter der Bühne zu treffen. Erster Eindruck von der Funktionsweise des Kinos. Beobachtet Tag für Tag, wie unweit vom elterlichen Haus Ronald Neame mit Walter Matthau und Glenda Jackson die Agentenkomödie „Hopscotch” dreht. Bekommt mit 13 endlich seine erste Super-8-Kamera und dreht noch im selben Jahr die ersten drei Filme: „My Homelife”, eine Dokumentation über das Haus der Eltern, „Gebratenes Fleisch”, einen von Roald Dahl inspirierten Kanibalismus-Krimi und ein Portrait des Kärntner Spiegelkünstlers Arnulf Komposch mit dem Titel „3 x Ulf” Sieht im Fernsehen eine Dokumentation über Walt Disney und beginnt mit der Arbeit an einem eigenen Zeichentrickfilm. Innerhalb von sechs Monaten entsteht aus über 1.000 zerschnittenen Overheadfolien der Trickfilm „Auch Farbe kann träumen”. Mit 15 Inszenierung des ersten Films mit richtigen Schauspielern. Libgart Schwarz, Star der Berliner Schaubühne, spielt eine Rolle in dem Godzilla-beeinflussten Science-fiction Film „Monster in Salzburg”. Dabei werden ganze Straßenzüge von Salzburg als Modell nachgebaut. Das Monster selbst ist eine 30 cm lange Holzpuppe mit Zwirnhaaren, welches per Einzelbildschaltung zum Leben erweckt wird. Ab diesem Jahr beginnt auch das theoretische Studium des Mediums Film durch Ankauf von zahlreichen Filmbüchern und gezielter Drehbuchanalyse. Nach langen Vorbereitungen beginnt die Arbeit an dem ersten abendfüllenden Spielfilm „Vom Geist der Zeit”. Während die Schulleistungen rapide bergab gehen entsteht in 14-monatigen Dreharbeiten ein 112 Minuten langer Genre-mix aus Action, Horror und Science-fiction Film, der in Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft spielt. Peter Handke spielt als Gaststar einen aufgeregten Passanten, die anderen Rollen übernehmen Laiendarsteller aus der Schule. Das Wohnzimmer im elterlichen Haus wird fast zwei Jahre lang für die Dreharbeiten gesperrt. Um das 70.000 Schilling (5.000 Euro) Budget für „Vom Geist der Zeit” zu finanzieren Betätigung als Statist und später Requisiteur bei den Salzburger Festspielen bei Inszenierungen von Jean-Pierre Ponelle, Michael Hampe, Gernot Friedel, Johannes Schaaf und Herbert von Karajan. In diesem Jahr beginnt die später immer heftiger werdende Liebe zu Computern mit der Programmierung von zahlreichen Videospielen auf einem Sinclair Computersystem mit bunten Tasten. Premiere von „Vom Geist der Zeit” im Mozart-Kino in Salzburg, im Herbst Aufführung bei den Welser Filmtagen. „Vom Geist der Zeit” besteht aus über 1.000 Einstellungen, von denen manche über 20 Mal in der Kamera belichtet wurden. Horst Christoph schreibt im Profil „Ein zwei-Stunden-Filmfeuerwerk!”. Im Herbst gerade-noch Matura am Akademischen Gymnasium in Salzburg und Aufnahme an der Wiener Filmakademie. Mit 18 der erste öffentliche Vortrag über „Vom Geist der Zeit” auf Einladung der Hochschule für Gestaltung in Linz. Verlässt nach wenigen Wochen wieder die Wiener Filmakademie und widmet sich dem Drehbuchschreiben. Ein Science-fiction Film, der im Mikrokosmos spielt, wird geplant, aber nicht verwirklicht. Einladung von Johannes Schaaf nach Cinecitta zu den Dreharbeiten von Michael Endes „Momo”. In den Hallen nebenan entsteht zeitgleich „Der Name der Rose” mit Sean Connery. -3- 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 Gemeinsam mit zwei Partnern wird der Filmverleih „Classic Films” gegründet, der sich um den Vertrieb von künstlerisch wertvollen Filmen bemüht. Die 60 Filme des Verleihprogramms umfassen u.a. den Oscargewinner „Babettes Fest”, „The World according to Garp”, „Eraserhead” von David Lynch, den letzten Film von John Huston, „The Dead”, und den Film eines damals unbekannten Spaniers namens Pedro Almodovar, „Das Gesetz der Begierde”. Mit dem Verleih von „Drowning by Numbers” beginnt der lang anhaltende Kontakt zu Peter Greenaway. Im Rahmen von Classic Films Gestaltung von Retrospektiven, dabei u. a. Wiederaufführung der Filme von Andy Warhol und Max Fleischer. Übernahme des Gesamtwerks von Wim Wenders für Österreich. Mitgestaltung der Retrospektive der Filme von Laurel & Hardy erstmals in der ungekürzten Originalfassung. Die äußerst erfolgreiche Retrospektive tourt durch ganz Österreich und kommt anschließend auch in deutsche Programmkinos. Begegnung mit dem Kameramann und Regisseur John Bailey (Kamera u.a.. bei „American Gigolo”, „Mishima”, „Silverado”, „As good as it gets”). Einladung nach Hollywood. Assistent von John Bailey bei dessen Science fiction Komödie „The Search for intelligent life in the universe” mit Lily Tomlin („Nashville”, „The Player”, „Short Cuts”) Beginn der jahrelangen Mitarbeit am Marketing der damals neuen Konzerthaus-Musikreihe „Wien modern” für Karsten Witt. Die allgemeinen Probleme der Wiener Programmkinos erfassen auch „Classic Films”. Der Verleih wird an einen der Partner verkauft und schränkt seine Aktivitäten ein. Wieder zurück zu den Computern: für die Hochschule für angewandte Kunst wird eine Trickfilmdatenbank entwickelt, mit welcher die Filmeinsätze auf Festivals organisiert werden. Es bleibt ab 1991 nicht unbeobachtet, dass Computer und Film immer mehr in einem neuen Medium zusammenzuwachsen: Beginn der Beschäftigung mit CDROMs. 6-monatige Mitarbeit an der Ausstellung von Peter Greenaway in der Hofburg, dem Semper Depot und der Akademie der bildenden Künste. Dabei erste künstlerische Zusammenarbeit an einem Kurzfilm von Peter Greenaway, „The falls remake”, der jedoch bis heute nicht fertig gestellt wurde. Mitarbeit an dem Calsi-Großbildprojekt anlässlich der Wiener Festwochenausstellung „Der zerbrochene Spiegel”. An der Außenwand der Kunsthalle entsteht dabei das größte Computerbild der Welt, welches sogar eine Eintragung im „Guinness Book of Records” erhält. Ab März beginnt die Arbeit an der damals neu zu erfindenden Diagonale, dem neuen „Festival des österreichischen Films”. Gemeinsam mit Martin Schweighofer und Peter Tscherkassky werden die Grundpfeiler für das neue Festival gelegt: Programmierung, Organisation, Infrastruktur, Sponsorenakquisition, Kartenverkaufssystem, Gästeorganisation und -betreuung, Katalogproduktion, Events und deren Marketing und Werbung. Für Peter Greenaways Film „The Baby of Macon” werden die deutschen Untertitel übersetzt. Die zweite Diagonale wird mit Virgil Widrich als Produktionsleiter in Salzburg organisiert. Erstmals wird bei der Diagonale eine Filmdatenbank erstellt, die mittels „database publishing” den gesamten Katalog der Austrian Film Commission und der Diagonale in wenigen Minuten automatisch layouten kann. Im Auftrag der Austrian Film Commission Erstellung einer weiteren Filmdatenbank, diesmal für die „Europeans” beim Filmfestival in Cannes. Letztmaliges Stattfinden der Diagonale in Salzburg mit dem neuen Intendanten Heinrich Mis (damals ORF Kunststücke). Unter dem Kurator Konrad Becker werden Teile des Programms erstmals auch im Internet präsentiert. Für „hunderjahrekino” (Intendant: Hans Hurch) wird eine Datenbank erstellt, welche die Daten von allen Kinos Österreichs miteinander vergleichen und auswerten kann. Die Beschäftigung mit Drehbuchsoftware beginnt in diesem Jahr und mündet in zahlreichen Vorträgen und Artikeln zu diesem Thema. -4- 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 Erste künstlerische Mitarbeit an einer CD-ROM: Verfassung von Drehbuch und Dialogen für „Robbi - Abenteuer auf CD-ROM”. Die Geschichte einer kleinen Robbe, die vor den Menschen auf eine Urwaldinsel flüchtet, entwickelt sich mit 20.000 verkauften Stück zu einem CD-ROM Bestseller für Kinder. Für diese CD wird von Virgil Widrich die „interactive dialog engine” entwickelt, die archetypischen Charakteren ganz konkrete Gedanken und immer neue dramaturgische Situationen einhaucht. Diese Erfindung erhält internationale Beachtung und wird in zahlreichen Vorträgen präsentiert. Ein Opern-Filmprojekt mit Peter Greenaway, bei welchem eine Oper erstmals mit Helmkameras von den Sängern selbst verfilmt worden wäre, scheitert an Problemen mit dem Komponisten. Für den Kurzfilmverleih Sixpack Film wird eine Filmdatenbank entwickelt, mit deren Hilfe österreichische Kurzfilme im Inund Ausland verliehen werden können. CD-ROMs sind als fixes Medium etabliert. Parallel werden zwei der größten CD-ROM Projekte, die in Österreich je durchgeführt wurden, entwickelt: für eine 4-teilige Mathematikserie werden die didaktischen Konzepte und die interaktiven Charaktere entwickelt, sowie das Drehbuch und die Dialoge geschrieben; Die „Salzburger Festspiele CD-ROM” wird konzipiert und mit einer Datenbank über alle Credits aller Aufführungen aus 75 Jahren Festspielgeschichte versehen. Nach dem Ausflug in das interaktive Medium wieder verstärkte Hinwendung zum linearen Geschichtenerzählen: das Drehbuch „Heller als der Mond” entsteht. Die Geschichte von Fremden in der Welt – Ausländern ebenso wie Inländern – wird mit dem Drehbuchpreis 1997 der Stadt Salzburg ausgezeichnet. In Verbindung von Film und Elektronik entsteht gemeinsam mit Martin Reinhart der Kurzfilm „tx-transform”, der erstmals ein neues Filmverfahren vorstellt, welches die Raum- und die Zeitache im Film miteinander vertauscht. Diese Erfindung wird unter rund 40 von 1.500 Einreichungen auf der „Ars Electronica” in Linz präsentiert und erfährt begeisterte internationale Anerkennung. Eine Reihe von weiteren tx-transformProjekten im Film-, Multimedia- und Ausstellungsbereich in Österreich, England, Italien, der Schweiz und den USA werden konzipiert. In den wenigen Arbeitspausen wird das Drehbuch für einen neuen Kurzfilm geschrieben: „Copy Shop” – nach der Raum/Zeit Verschiebung nun eine Verschiebung der Identität des Beobachters im Film – erzählt die Geschichte eines Mannes, der sich solange vervielfältigt, bis die ganze Welt nur mehr aus ihm besteht. Umwandlung der Produktionsfirma von einem Einzelunternehmen in eine GmbH. Im Zuge der Neueinrichtung des Technischen Museums Wien werden von einem 35köpfigen Team unter der Leitung der Virgil Widrich Film- und Multimediaproduktions G.m.b.H. hundert verschiedene Multimediastationen (darunter auch 4 Kinos) erstellt, welche den Besuchern einen vertiefenden Informationszugang bieten. Dabei werden Bild- und Filmprojektionen, Hörstationen, akustische Installationen, sowie interaktive Anwendungen unter Verwendung von Text, Bild, Musik, Video, Animation und 3DTechnik eingesetzt. Mit einem Minimalbudget und einem jungen Team beginnen im Sommer die Dreharbeiten zum ersten Kinofilm: „Heller als der Mond”, der von Virgil Widrich produziert und inszeniert wird. In den Hauptrollen u.a. Piroska Szekely, Christopher Buchholz, Horst Buchholz und Lars Rudolph. Der Film wird Ende des Jahres fertig gestellt. „Heller als der Mond” hat in Rotterdam Premiere, gewinnt beim Filmfestival in Angers gleich zwei Preise und wird zu über 30 weiteren Filmfestivals eingeladen. Der Multimediabereich expandiert: Für das „Museum Ladin” in Südtirol werden drei Medienstationen erstellt, die Websites für die Wiener Sängerknaben und die Austrian Film Commission werden produziert. Mitgründung der filmpipeline GmbH., ein Internetfilmunternehmen als Tochter der webfreetv.com AG. Virgil Widrich ist -5- 2001 2002 2003 2004 Geschäftsführer des neuen Unternehmens. Im April finden die Dreharbeiten zu „Copy Shop” statt, Johannes Silberschneider spielt insgesamt 280 Rollen. Nach 4 Monaten Schnitt und weiteren 4 Monaten digitaler Postproduktion wird der Film Ende des Jahres fertig gestellt. Im November Teilnahme mit der Installation „tx-transformator” (gemeinsam mit Martin Reinhart) beim Dutch Electronic Art Forum in Rotterdam. „Copy Shop” hat Premiere in Rotterdam und gewinnt im Lauf der nächsten Monate 30 internationale Preise. Es folgen TV-Ankäufe in 12 Ländern und Einladungen zu über 100 Filmfestivals. Die filmpipeline GmbH. wird nach erfolgter Gründungsphase an die Mutterfirma webfreetv.com AG verkauft. Der tx-transformator wird beim Diagonale Filmfestival in Graz ausgestellt. Ein neuer Kurzfilm, „Fast Film” wird geschrieben, die Arbeit an einem neuen Spielfilmdrehbuch beginnt. Im März gemeinsam mit Stefan Reiter, Stefan Unger und Dieter Göschler Gründung der checkpointmedia AG (www.checkpointmedia.com), welche die Multimediaaktiviäten in Zukunft betreiben wird. Die Filmproduktion bleibt als unabhängiges Unternehmen erhalten. Die ersten Projekte der neuen AG: Pflichtenhefterstellung für die website des Museumsquartiers Wien, Medienstationen für die Niederösterreichische Landesausstellung 2001, eine DVD für das Naturhistorische Museum Wien und Erstellung einer Datenbank für Centropa über das jüdische Leben in den 14 Ländern Zentral- und Osteuropas. Im August Gründung der Amour Fou Filmproduktion GmbH (www.amourfou.at) gemeinsam mit Gabriele Kranzelbinder, Alexander Ivanceanu und dem Wiener Volksbildungsverein/Polyfilm. Im Dezember beziehen die Amour Fou Filmproduktion GmbH. und die Virgil Widrich Film- und Multimediaproduktionen G.m.b.H. das neue Büro in der Lindengasse 32, 1070 Wien. Die Amour Fou Filmproduktion GmbH. produziert Filme von Bady Minck (“Im Anfang war der Blick”) und Martin Arnold (“Deanimated - The invisible Ghost”). Die checkpointmedia AG bezieht ihre neuen Büroräumlichkeiten im „Haus der Musik”, Seilerstätte 30, 1010 Wien und stellt die gemeinsam mit der Mensalia Unternehmensberatung erstellte Software „Genesto” vor, mit welcher interaktive Geschäftsberichte für das Internet erstellt werden. Die ersten Kunden: DaimlerChrysler, Sanochemia, Flughafen Wien. Weitere Multimediaprojekte: Installationen für das Wiener Riesenrad, die Kunsthalle Leoben und das Salzburger Museum Carolino Augusteum. „Copy Shop” wird von der „Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science” als erster österreichischer Kurzfilm für den Oscar nominiert. Amour Fou präsentiert die Filme „Im Anfang war der Blick” (Bady Minck), „Struggle” (Ruth Mader) und „Pas de repos pour les braves” (Alain Guiraudie) bei den Filmfestspielen in Cannes. Virgil Widrichs „Fast Film” wird nach zweijähriger Produktionszeit im April fertig gestellt und in den Wettbewerb der Filmfestspiele Cannes eingeladen. Das Wachstum der checkpointmedia geht auch 2003 weiter: Dommuseum Salzburg, Telekom Austria, RWE, Austrian Airlines sind nur einige der neuen Kunden. Im Auftrag von Red Bull werden umfassende multimediale Installationen für den Hangar-7 in Salzburg erstellt. Amour Fou präsentiert eineinhalb Jahre nach der Gründung gleich vier Filme bei den Filmfestspielen in Cannes: „Im Anfang war der Blick” (Bady Minck), „Struggle” (Ruth Mader) und „Pas de repos pour les braves” (Alain Guiraudie) und „Fast Film” von Virgil Widrich, der im Wettbewerb um die Goldene Palme läuft. „Fast Film” gewinnt in Toronto als „Best Animated Short” und weitere Preise bei den Festivals inCURT/Spanien und Vila do Conde/ Portugal. Im Juli Präsentation der Kurzfilme von Virgil Widrich im San Francisco MOMA. Bis Ende 2003 gewinnt „Fast Film” 17 internationale Kurzfilmpreise. Im Dezember Wiedereröffnung der „Swarovski Kristallwelten” mit mehreren multimedialen Installationen der checkpointmedia AG. Die nunmehrigen checkpointmedia-Mitarbeiter Ralph Ortner und Mattias Schnellnberger statten die vier neuen Säle des Wiener Musikvereins mit modernster -6- 2005 2006 2007 2008 Medientechnik aus. checkpointmedia erhält den Auftrag für die Beschallung im neuen A1-Flagshipstore in der Mariahilferstrasse. Von 3. bis 7. März findet in Graz die „Diagonale der Filmschaffenden” statt, das von der Regierung unterstützte Festival fällt aus. Amour Fou co-produziert „Ma Mère” (Regie: Christophe Honoré) mit Isabelle Huppert, in Cannes wird „Girls and Cars” von Thomas Woschitz präsentiert. Der Erfolg von „Fast Film” geht weiter: 33 internationale Filmpreise und 227 Festivaleinladungen. Im Mai wird Virgil Widrich zum Obmann des „Verbandes der österreichischen Filmregisseure” gewählt. "Copy Shop" läuft bei den Filmfestspielen in Cannes in der Reihe "Tous les cinémas du monde". checkpointmedia erhält den Auftrag für die multimediale Realisierung des Mozarthaus Vienna, welches zum Start des Wiener Mozartjahres am 27.1.2006 eröffnet wird. Im Naturhistorischen Museum Wien wird die Lichtsteuerung für die vier mal sechs Meter große und drei Meter hohe Hai-Vitrine realisiert. Amour Fou stellt "Crash Test Dummies" (Regie: Jörg Kalt) fertig. Ab April laufen die Dreharbeiten für György Pálfis "Taxidermia", im Herbst starten die Dreharbeiten für "Kurz davor ist es passiert" von Anja Salomonowitz. Die Dreharbeiten für "Jeder siebte Mensch" in China gehen weiter und werden Ende 2005 beendet. Im Oktober eröffnet das neue Besucherzentrum des Parlaments in Wien. checkpointmedia konzipierte, plante und realisierte alle Multimediastationen, darunter eine rund 20 Quadratmeter große Rückprojektionswand und 15 weitere innovative Medienstationen. Am 27.1.2006 eröffnet das "Mozarthaus Vienna". Die audiovisuellen Installationen im Mozarthaus sind inspiriert von den Medientechniken und "Wunderwelten" aus Mozarts Zeit. Highlight ist die multimediale Hommage an "Die Zauberflöte": Eine Bühnenlandschaft aus Kulissen, Projektionen und Lichteffekten zeigt eine Kurzversion der "Zauberflöte" als "virtuelle Spiegeloper" von 1791 bis heute. Im Mai eröffnet das "Museum Arbeitswelt - Steyr: working_world.net" mit Medienstationen, welche von der checkpointmedia technisch realisiert wurden. Im September wurde der checkpointmedia der Staatspreis für das Mozarthaus Vienna (Kategorie "Kultur und Unterhaltung") sowie der Kategoriepreis "Öffentliche Informationen und Dienste" für das Besucherzentrum des österreichischen Parlaments verliehen. Auf der Viennale hat der Film "Jeder siebte Mensch" von Elke Groen und Ina Ivanceanu Premiere. Produktion: Virgil Widrich Film- und Multimediaproduktions G.m.b.H. und Minotaurus Film sàrl (Luxembourg). Geburt des Sohnes Zino Salomonowitz am 14.1.2007. Nach 6 Jahren Vorstandstätigkeit im "Verband Filmregie Österreich" (davon 3 Jahren als Obmann) lässt sich Virgil Widrich kein weiteres Mal zur Wahl aufstellen und verlässt den Vorstand. Auch in der Amour Fou Filmproduktion gibt es Veränderung: Die Geschäftsführer, Gabriele Kranzelbinder und Alexander Ivanceanu, trennen sich, Thomas Woschitz und Virgil Widrich treten als Gesellschafter aus der Amour Fou aus. Alexander Ivanceanu führt die Amour Fou gemeinsam mit Bady Minck weiter, Gabriele Kranzelbinder gründet ihrerseits die "KGP - Kranzelbinder Gabriele Production GmbH". In der checkpointmedia sind zur Jahresmitte über 50 Projekte in Arbeit, darunter Websites, Medieninstallationen, Ausstellungskonzepte, Smart Home, Wunderkammern und viele mehr. Ab Herbst ist Virgil Widrich Universitätsprofessor für digitale Kunst an der Universität für angewandte Kunst in Wien. Nach jahrelanger Ideensammlung Beginn der Arbeit an dem Spielfilmdrehbuch "Die Nacht der 1000 Stunden". checkpointmedia eröffnet ein innovatives Firmenmuseum für die Firma Krones in Deutschland. Virgil Widrich übernimmt im Rahmen von Linz-Kulturhauptstadt 2009 die künstlerische Leitung der Ausstellung "Linz. Stadt im Glück". Die Ausstellung verwandelt das Linzer Stadtmuseum Nordico in ein Wohnhaus, dessen Zimmer die Stadt und ihre Entwicklung in den letzten drei Jahrzehnten reflektieren. Ein weiteres Ausstellungsprojekt wird mit den StudentInnen der digitalen Kunst an der Universität für angewandte Kunst realisiert: "Alias in Wonderland" wird von 25.6. bis 12.7.2009 im Freiraum/quartier 21, Museumsquartier Wien gezeigt. Über einen "physischen Browser", der durch Verschieben bedient wird, kann die Vielfältigkeit der Klasse in einem einzigen Raum medial präsentiert werden.Virgil Widrich wird mit der künstlerischen Leitung des neuen Masterlehrgangs "Art & Science Visualization" an der Universität für angewandte Kunst betraut. Der Lehrgang startet im Herbst 2009. Die Projektentwicklung für den Spielfilm "Die Nacht der 1000 Stunden" wird Ende 2009 soweit abgeschlossen, dass um Herstellungsförderung angesucht werden kann. Virgil Widrich übernimmt die künstlerische Leitung der Ausstellung "90 Jahre Salzburger Festspiele", die von 17.6 bis 26.10.2010 im Salzburg Museum stattfindet. Herzstück ist eine multimediale "Meta-Aufführung" aus den wichtigsten Produktionen der letzten neun Jahrzehnte, welche zu einer neuen Aufführung zusammengesetzt werden, die es in dieser Form nie gab. Die Bühne für diese Produktion ist ein abstraktes Modell, das die Spielstätten der Festspiele, ganz nach Max Reinhardts Motto "die Stadt als Bühne", zitiert und nachbildet. Von 24.6. bis 18.7.2010 stellen im Rahmen der "Essence" der Universität für angewandte Kunst 15 StudentInnen der Klasse "Digitale Kunst" ihre Werke im Künstlerhaus Wien aus. Virgil Widrich gestaltet einen Filmbeitrag mit dem Titel "make/real" für die Ausstellung "Roboterträume", welche im Museum Tinguely Basel (8.6. bis 12.9.2010) und im Kunsthaus Graz (8.10.2010 bis 20.2.2011) stattfindet. After lengthy preparations, work begins on his first full-length feature film, “Vom Geist der Zeit.” (“The Spirit of Time”) While his grades drop, a 14-months’ shooting produces a 112-minute genre cross-over mixing action, horror and science fiction in the past, present and future. Peter Handke plays a guest role as an excited passer-by, and lay actors from his school play the other parts. The living room in his parents’ house is closed for a period of almost two years due to filming. Work as an extra and then property man for the Salzburg Festival for productions by Jean-Pierre Ponelle, Michael Hampe, Gernot Friedel, Johannes Schaaf and Herbert von Karajan to raise the Schilling 70,000.—(Euro 5.000) budget for “Vom Geist der Zeit.” This year marks the beginning of his growing love of computers: He programs a number of video games on a Sinclair computer with colorful keys. Return to work with computers: An animation film database is developed for the Academy of applied Arts in Vienna to administer the presentation of films at festivals around the world. The fact that computers and film are progressively growing into a single medium does not go unnoticed after 1991: start of work with CD-ROMs. Six-months of work on Peter Greenaway’s internationally acclaimed exhibit “100 Objects to Represent the World” in Vienna’s Hofburg, the Semper Depot and the Academy of Fine Arts. First artistic cooperation on a short film by Peter Greenaway, “The falls remake,” which was never completed. Work on the CALSI project for the Vienna Festival exhibit entitled “Der zerbrochene Spiegel.” In this project, the largest computer-generated image in the world, which was entered into the Guinness Book of Records, is affixed to the outer wall of the Kunsthalle. In March, work begins on a total overhaul of the Diagonale, the new “Festival of Austrian Film.” The foundation of the new festival is put into place together with Martin Schweighofer and Peter Tscherkassky: programming, organization, infrastructure, sponsor acquisition, ticket-sales system, visitor organization and service, catalog production, events and marketing for them, and advertising. Translation of the German subtitles for Peter Greenaway’s film “The Baby of Macon.” The second Diagonale is organized in Salzburg with Virgil Widrich as production manager. A film database is created which can be used for automatic layouting of the entire catalog of the Austrian Film Commission and the Diagonale in a few minutes (by means of desktop publishing). A second film database is commissioned by the Austrian Film Commission, this time for the “Europeans” at the Cannes film festival. Last Diagonale is held in Salzburg with the new director, Heinrich Mis (then ORF’s Kunststücke). Parts of the new program is presented on the Internet for the first time under curator Konrad Becker. A database is created for “hundertjahrekino” (curated by Hans Hurch); comparisons and evaluations of the data from all movie theaters in Austria are now possible. Work with screenplay software begins this year, leading to numerous lectures and articles on this subject. - 11 - 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 First creative work on a CD-ROM: He writes the screenplay and dialogs for “Robbi Abenteuer auf CD-ROM.” The story of a baby seal which flees hunters to a desert island becomes a CD-ROM bestseller for children with sales of 20,000. Virgil Widrich develops for this project an interactive dialog engine, which gives archetypal characters concrete thoughts and injects new dramatic situations. This invention is met with interest around the world and is presented in lectures in Austria and abroad (e.g. at the Medienlabor München and the University of Vienna‘s Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence). An opera film project with Peter Greenaway in which, for the first time, an opera will be filmed by the singers with helmet-mounted cameras, is abandoned due to problems with the composer. A film database is developed for the short-film distributor Sixpack Film; this database is used to administer the rental of Austrian short films throughout Austria and abroad. The CD-ROM is established as a medium. At the same time, two of the largest CDROM projects to have been realized in Austria go into development: He develops the didactic concepts and the interactive characters and writes the screenplay and dialogs for a four-part mathematics series, and creates the “Salzburg Festival CD-ROM,” which includes a database containing the credits from all performances given over the past 75 years. After this excursion into the world of this interactive medium, renewal of work with linear story-telling: The screenplay “Heller als der Mond” (“Brighter than the Moon”) is completed. The story of aliens – both domestic and foreign – is awarded Salzburg’s screenplay prize 1997. A marriage of film and electronics gives birth to the short film entitled “tx-transform,” which was created together with Martin Reinhart; this short presents an innovative new technique which transposes the time and space axes in film. This invention is presented with 40 other submissions from a group of 1.500 at the Ars Electronica in Linz and is acclaimed by the international audience. A number of tx-transform projects in the areas of film, multimedia and art exhibition are planned in Austria, England, Italy, Switzerland and the USA. In one of few breaks from regular work, a screenplay is written for a new short film: “Copy Shop.” After the shift in time and space, this film describes a shift in the identity of the observer in film and the story of a man who copies himself until he fills up the entire world. The production company is being made into a limited company (GmbH). In the course of the refurbishment of the Vienna Museum of Technology one hundred different media stations (including four cinemas) are created by a team of 35 specialists under the supervision of Virgil Widrich Film- und Multimediaproduktions G.m.b.H. These stations give visitors the chance to discover more about the individual themes by means of image and film projection, audio stations, acoustic installations and interactive text, image, music, video, animation and 3D technology applications. In the summer the shooting of the first feature film “Heller als der Mond” (“Brighter than the Moon”) starts on a shoestring budget and with a very young team. The movie is produced and directed by Virgil Widrich and stars Piroska Szekely, Christopher Buchholz, Horst Buchholz and Lars Rudolph, among others. The film is finished at the end of the year. “Heller als der Mond” premieres in Rotterdam, scoops two prizes at the Angers Film Festival and is invited to 30 further film festivals. Work in the field of multimedia expands: three media stations are created for the “Museum Ladin” in South Tyrol, the websites for the Vienna Boys’ Choir and the Austrian Film Commission are produced. Virgil Widrich co-founds filmpipeline GmbH., an Internet film company and subsidiary of webfreetv.com AG, taking on the post of managing director of the new firm. In April, the film “Copy Shop” is shot. Johannes Silberschneider plays a total of 280 roles. After 4 months’ editing and a further 4 months’ digital postproduction the film is completed at the end of the year. In November Virgil Widrich takes part in the Dutch Electronic Art Forum in Rotterdam, installing and demonstrating the “tx-transformator” - 12 - 2001 2002 2003 2004 together with Martin Reinhart. “Copy Shop” premieres in Rotterdam and wins 30 awards at various film festivals in the following months. It is then bought by TV companies in 12 countries and is invited to over 100 international film festivals. Following its foundation filmpipeline GmbH. is sold to the parent company webfreetv.com AG. The tx-transformator is exhibited at the Diagonale Film Festival in Graz. A new short film, “Fast Film”, is written and work begins on the script for a new feature film. In March, checkpointmedia AG, a joint-stock company, is formed with Stefan Reiter, Stefan Unger and Dieter Göschler, which will be responsible for the multimedia branch in future. The film production company is maintained as an independent firm. The new company’s first projects are the planning of the website for the Museumsquartier in Vienna, media stations for the Lower Austrian Regional Exhibition 2001, a DVD for the Museum of Natural History in Vienna and the creation of a database for Centropa on the life of Jews in the 14 countries of Central and Eastern Europe. In August a second film company is founded: Amour Fou Filmproduktionen GmbH, together with Gabriele Kranzelbinder, Alexander Ivanceanu and the Wiener Volksbildungsverein/Polyfilm. In December Amour Fou Filmproduktion GmbH. and Virgil Widrich Film- und Multimediaproduktionen G.m.b.H. move into a new office at Lindengasse 32, 1070 Wien. Amour Fou Filmproduktion GmbH. produces the films by Bady Minck (“Im Anfang war der Blick”) and Martin Arnold (“Deanimated - The invisible Ghost”). checkpointmedia AG moves into the new office at the “Haus der Musik”, Seilerstätte 30, 1010 Vienna. The new software “Genesto”, which was produced in cooperation with Mensalia Unternehmensberatung, is presented. “Genesto” is a content management system to produce interactive annual reports for the internet. First clients are DaimlerChrysler, Sanochemia and the Vienna International Airport. Other multimedia projects are: installations for the Giant Ferris Wheel, Kunsthalle Leoben and the Museum SMCA Salzburg. The “Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science” nominates “Copy Shop” for the Oscar. Amour Fou presents the films “Im Anfang war der Blick” (Bady Minck), “Struggle” (Ruth Mader) and “Pas de repos pour les braves” (Alain Guiraudie) at the Cannes Filmfestival. After two years of production Virgil Widrich's “Fast Film” is finished in April. checkpointmedia continues to grow in 2003: Dommuseum Salzburg, Telekom Austria, RWE and Austrian Airlines are only some of the new clients. On behalf of Red Bull expansive Multimedia-Installations are being created for the Hangar-7 in Salzburg. Only one and a half year after its foundation, Amour Fou presents four films at the Cannes Filmfestival: “Im Anfang war der Blick” (Bady Minck), “Struggle” (Ruth Mader), “Pas de repos pour les braves” (Alain Guiraudie) and “Fast Film” by Virgil Widrich which is presented in the official selection competing for the Golden Palm. “Fast Film” wins “Best Animated Short” in Toronto and other awards at the Festivals inCURT/Spain and Vila do Conde/Portugal. In July presentation of the short films at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Until the end of 2003 “Fast Film” wins 17 international short film awards. In December reopening of the “Swarovski Chrystal World” with several multimedia installations by checkpointmedia AG. Now checkpointmedia staff members Ralph Ortner and Mattias Schnellnberger are equipping the four new halls of the Wiener Musikverein with state-of-the-art media technology. checkpointmedia is assigned to provide the acoustic equipment for the new A1 Flagship store. From March 3 to 7, Graz sees the “Diagonale der Filmschaffenden”, a festival organized by Austrian filmmakers; the rival, Government sponsored festival does not take place. Amour Fou is co-producing “Ma Mère” (directed by Christophe Honoré) with Isabelle Huppert, in Cannes, Thomas Woschitz’s “Girls and Cars” is presented. The success of “Fast Film” continues: 34 international awards and 257 festival invitations. In May, Virgil Widrich is elected chairman of the “Verband der österreichischen - 13 - 2005 2006 2007 2008 Filmregisseure”, the association of the Austrian movie directors. "Copy Shop" is presented at the film festival in Cannes in the series "Tous les cinémas du monde". checkpointmedia is commissioned to design and instal the multimedia stations and films in the Mozart House Vienna that will open at the start of the Vienna Mozart Year on Jan. 27, 2006. In the Vienna Museum of Natural History, the light controls for the 4 to 6 metre long and 3 metre high shark cabinet are being installed. Amour Fou finishes "Crash Test Dummies" (director: Jörg Kalt). The shooting for György Pálfi's "Taxidermia" starts in April, autumn will see the shooting for Anja Salomonowitz's "Kurz davor ist es passiert". The shooting for "Every Seventh Person" continues in China and will be finished by the end of 2005. In October the new visitor centre of the Austrian Parliament is opened. checkpointmedia has designed and installed all the multimedia stations there, including a 20 sqm rear-projection wall and 15 other innovative interactive media stations. On January 27, 2006 the "Mozarthaus Vienna" opens its doors. The audiovisual installations were inspired by the media technology and "Worlds of Wonders" of Mozart's time. The highlight is the multimedia tribute to "The Magic Flute": a stage landscape consisting of sets, projections and lighting effects shows an abridged version of "The Magic Flute" as a "virtual mirrored opera" from 1791 to the present day. In May the "Museum Arbeitswelt - Steyr: working_world.net" opens. checkpointmedia was responsible for the technical realisation of the media stations. In September checkpointmedia is awarded the State Prize for the Mozarthaus Vienna (in the category "Culture and Entertainment") and the Category Prize "Public Information and Services" for the Austrian parliament's Visitor Centre. The Vienna Film festival premieres "Every Seventh Person" by Ina Ivanceanu and Elke Groen. After 6 years on the board of the Austrian film directors' association “Verband Filmregie Österreich" (3 of them as chairman) Virgil Widrich declines to stand for election again and leaves the board. Zaha Hadid wins the competition for the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum in Vilnius, Lithuania, against the star architects Daniel Libeskind and Massimiliano Fuksas. checkpointmedia developed a media concept for the entire building for Zaha Hadid and her team. In June, 13 works by Virgil Widrich's students of "digital Arts" are displayed in the "Essence" at the MAK (museum of applied arts / contemporary art) in Vienna. The diversity of the class is presented in various media in a single room by means of a "physical browser" which is pushed to different positions. The centrepiece is a multimedia "meta exhibition", a compilation of performances from the most important productions of the last nine decades rearranged to create a programme that never actually existed in this form.
