Examinations Office Faculty of Business and Social Sciences Prüfungsamt Fachbereich Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften Guidelines for the practical study phase Leitfaden Praxisphase According to the degree regulations governing the degree courses in the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences (WiSo) at RheinAhrCampus Remagen, the practical study phase is a compulsory and integral component of the graduation requirements of all fulltime degree courses in the area of business administration. Im Rahmen des Studiums an der Hochschule Koblenz, RheinAhrCampus Remagen, Fachbereich Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften (WiSo), ist gemäß der Prüfungsordnungen für die grundständigen betriebswirtschaftlichen Studiengänge die Ableistung einer Praxisphase Pflichtbestandteil der Hochschulausbildung. Depending on the students’ academic interests and career goals, a variety of options are available for the realization of the practical study phase: Je nach Zielsetzung sind prinzipiell unterschiedliche Formen der Praxisphase möglich: 1. An internship in companies or non-profit organisations and institutions providing practical experience in corporate or institutional environments either in Germany or abroad. Options include companies, associations and organisations. Als Betriebspraktikum zum Erwerb berufspraktischer Erfahrungen in gewerblichen oder gemeinnützigen Unternehmen im In- oder Ausland. Hierzu zählen Unternehmen, Institutionen, Vereine und Verbände. 2. A study abroad semester at a university outside Germany. Als Auslandssemester an einer ausländischen Hochschule. 3. An equivalent practical project within the university (only in exceptional and justified cases). Als gleichwertiges Praxisprojekt an der Hochschule (ausschließlich in begründeten Ausnahmefällen). Benefits for the students The experience in professional practice imparted during the practical study phase is an important addition to the content of the academic teaching on campus. Students are provided with an opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge they have acquired and to deepen it. The practical study phase should also support their orientation and the individual re-appraisal of their goals and skills and allow students to demonstrate their skills to potential future employers. Nutzen für die Studierenden… Im Rahmen der Praxisphase werden den Studierenden berufspraktische Erfahrungen vermittelt und damit die Studieninhalte der Hochschule sinnvoll ergänzt. Es bietet Studierenden die Möglichkeit, bereits erlerntes Wissen anzuwenden und zu vertiefen. Die Praxisphase dient auch zur Orientierung und Überprüfung der Neigungen und Fähigkeiten und bietet Studierenden ebenfalls die Gelegenheit, sich über die geleistete Arbeit für die Unternehmen zu empfehlen. Thus, they can draw on a wide range of skills and qualifications which they can contribute to the success of the company or institution. With an appropriate level of instruction and on-the-job training, they will be able to take care of project tasks and commit their highly qualified humanpower to the company or institution. What is more, companies may get a long-term impression of their potential for future leadership tasks and to identify candidates for future employment at an early stage. Nutzen für die Unternehmen… Studierende, die während ihrer Praxisphase in den Unternehmen arbeiten, haben bereits mehrere Semester absolviert. Damit besitzen die Studierenden bereits eine breite Qualifikation, die sie gewinnbringend in den Unternehmen einsetzen können. Die Studierenden sind nach entsprechender Anleitung und Einarbeitung in der Lage, Projektaufgaben zu übernehmen und bringen so ihre qualifizierte Arbeitskraft in die Unternehmen ein. Darüber hinaus können sich die Unternehmen über einen längeren Zeitraum über das Leistungsvermögen von potentiellen Nachwuchskräften orientieren und geeignete Personen ggf. für eine spätere Einstellung frühzeitig vormerken. Benefits for the university The practical study phase projects of the students provide the university with a continuous flow of impulses from corporate practice. Depending on the topics and results of the projects, some of them may inspire final theses or research projects. Nutzen für die Hochschule… Über die Praxisphase der Studierenden bezieht die Hochschule kontinuierlich Impulse aus der betrieblichen Praxis. Einige der Projekte können bei entsprechender Thematik und Ergebnissen in eine Abschlussarbeit oder ein längerfristiges Forschungsprojekt münden. Semesters vorgesehen mindestens 13 Wochen *) This refers to the compulsory practical phase P2 (cf. below). *) Es handelt sich hierbei ausschließlich um die verpflichtende Praxisphase P2 (siehe unten). Optional (additional) practical study phase P1 according to the Bachelor Examination Regulations 2010 and 2012 The curricula of the Bachelor Examination Regulations 2010 and 2012 feature an optional practical study phase (P1) with a minimal duration of 12 weeks, which may be replaced by completing Module B52 “Studium Generale”. Students are free to complete P1 and P2 separately (1x at least 13 weeks, 1x at least 12 weeks) or to combine them by completing one practical study phase of at least 25 weeks. A study abroad semester at an international university will normally be considered equivalent with P1 and P2, unless students decide to apply for credit for P1 or P2 only. Students must inform the examinations office about the intended purpose of the study abroad semester by completing the appropriate registration form for the practical study phase or by stating their preferences on the “Learning Agreement”. Optionale Praxisphase P1 im Rahmen der Bachelor-Prüfungsordnungen 2010 und 2012 Das Curriculum der Bachelor-Prüfungsordnungen 2010 und 2012 sieht daneben noch eine optionale Praxisphase (P1) im Umfang von mindestens 12 Wochen oder die Belegung des Moduls B 52 „Studium Generale“ vor. Bei Wahl von P1+P2 können diese entweder separat voneinander absolviert (1x mindestens 13 Wochen, 1x mindestens 12 Wochen) oder direkt kombiniert werden (1x mindestens 25 Wochen). Das Auslandssemester an einer ausländischen Hochschule umfasst P1+P2, wahlweise nur P1 oder P2. Die gewünschte Verwendung ist auf dem Formular „Anmeldung Praxisphase“ kenntlich zu machen bzw. auf dem „Learning Agreement“ zu vermerken. Page 3 of 6 Guidelines for practical study phase / Leitfaden Praxisphase 07/13 Examinations Office Faculty of Business and Social Sciences Prüfungsamt Fachbereich Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften Preparation and practical steps Prior to the practical phase there should be a first conversation between the students and representatives of the company or institution. This initial contact should be used to identify the areas of work, the tasks and activities and, if appropriate, to define a project. It is desirable that students deepen their existing skills and acquire additional skills for future professional work in their respective areas of specialisation. However, a focus on general tasks and functions in the area of business management is also possible. During the practical study phase, the students are assigned an academic supervisor. Any problems which might endanger the negotiated goals of the practical study phase should be negotiated to this academic supervisor at an early stage. Depending on the specifications of the academic supervisor, there may be compulsory on-campus evaluation meetings. If this is the case, students should be given permission to attend these meetings after consultation with the host company. Students are required to write a report as specified by the academic supervisor and submit it to the university. Vorbereitung, Ablauf… Vor Beginn der Praxisphase sollte eine Abstimmung zwischen den Studierenden und den Unternehmen stattfinden. In diesem Gespräch mögen die Einsatzbereiche, Aufgaben und Tätigkeiten vereinbart und ggf. ein Projekt definiert werden. Es ist wünschenswert, dass die Studierenden in der Praxisphase fachspezifische Kenntnisse vertiefen bzw. erwerben, die den Studienschwerpunkten in den jeweiligen Studiengängen entsprechen. Jedoch sind auch andere Themen aus dem Bereich der betriebswirtschaftlichen Praxis denkbar. Während der Praxisphase werden die Studierenden von einer bzw. einem Lehrenden der Hochschule betreut. Treten während der Praxisphase Schwierigkeiten auf, die die Umsetzung der vereinbarten Ziele gefährden, so ist eine rechtzeitige Rücksprache mit der bzw. dem gewählten Lehrenden zu halten. Je nach Anforderungen der bzw. des betreuenden Lehrenden können während der Praxisphase auch Veranstaltungen stattfinden, für die die Studierenden nach Absprache mit den Unternehmen freizustellen sind. Über die Praxisphase wird von den Studierenden ein Bericht angefertigt, der der bzw. dem betreuenden Lehrenden der Hochschule vorgelegt werden muss. This certificate must be submitted to the academic supervisor. The case of a study abroad semester, a transcript of records documenting at least three courses (registration and participation) must be submitted. Nachweis, Anerkennung… Nach Ableistung der Praxisphase stellen die Unternehmen den Studierenden eine Bescheinigung aus, die den Beschäftigungszeitraum dokumentiert und eine kurze Beschreibung der Tätigkeiten enthält. Diese Bescheinigung ist ebenfalls der bzw. dem Lehrenden als Nachweis vorzulegen. Im Falle eines Auslandssemesters an einer ausländischen Hochschule ist das „Academic Transcript of Records“ mit mindestens drei angemeldeten und belegten Veranstaltungen einzureichen. Contracts The students are responsible for choosing an appropriate placement for their practical study phase. The university will advise them in this context. It is advisable that written contracts be entered into prior to the beginning of the practical study phase. These contracts should specify the rights and obligations of the student as well as those of the company or institution; they should also include the type and duration of the activities of the student during the internship. Sample contracts are provided by the university. Standard forms used by the company or institution may also be used. It is common for companies or institutions to provide a stipend or salary to the student. This point must be negotiated between the student and the company or institution. If necessary, confidentiality agreements concerning the contents of the practical study phase may be entered into; these should include the company or institution, the student and the academic supervisor. Confidentiality agreements should be documented in writing and signed by all parties involved prior to the beginning of the practical study phase. Vertragliche Vereinbarungen… Die Studierenden sind für die Wahl einer geeigneten Praxisphase verantwortlich. Die Hochschule übernimmt dabei eine beratende Funktion. Aus versicherungstechnischen Gründen wird empfohlen, vor Beginn der Praxisphase zwischen den Unternehmen und den Studierenden einen Vertrag abzuschließen, der die Rechte und Pflichten der Vertragspartner sowie die Art und Dauer der Tätigkeit der Studierenden festlegt. Vertragsmuster werden seitens der Hochschule zur Verfügung gestellt. Betriebseigene Verträge können ebenso genutzt werden. Für die Zeit der Praxisphase ist es üblich, dass die Unternehmen den Studierenden eine Aufwandsentschädigung zahlen, deren Höhe zwischen den Unternehmen und den Studierenden vereinbart wird. Es können bei Bedarf zwischen den Unternehmen, den Studierenden und ggf. der bzw. dem betreuenden Lehrenden Geheimhaltungsvereinbarungen über die Inhalte der Praxisphase getroffen werden. Diese sollten vor Beginn der Praxisphase schriftlich festgehalten und von den Beteiligten unterzeichnet werden. Students must be included in the statutory workers compensation schemes; they must get accident insurance cover as well as adequate liability insurance cover. The university cannot accept any responsibility or liability for damages caused by students during their practical study phase. The student must secure adequate liability insurance cover and accident insurance cover if the company or institution requires the student to do so. Versicherungsschutz… Für Studierende in der Praxisphase gelten die gleichen Regeln wie für regulär Beschäftigte. Gegen Unfallfolgen sind die Studierenden über die Betriebshaftpflicht und die Mitgliedschaft der Unternehmen in einer Berufsgenossenschaft zu versichern. Die Hochschule haftet nicht für Schäden, die die Studierenden verursachen. Es ist die Aufgabe der Studierenden, für einen ausreichenden Versicherungsschutz zur Deckung des beruflichen Haftpflichtrisikos bzw. von Unfallfolgen zu sorgen, sofern die Unternehmen dies verlangen. Registration The registration for the practical study phase can only be accomplished by completing the form “Registration for a practical study phase” accurately and submitting it to the examinations office prior to the beginning of the practical study phase! Please keep in mind that credit for the practical study phase will only be provided if this form has been completed, signed by all the required parties and submitted to the examinations office. In the case of a study abroad semester, the registration form is substituted by the “Learning Agreement”. Anmeldung… Die Anmeldung der Praxisphase erfolgt ausschließlich über das Formular „Anmeldung Praxisphase“, das vollständig ausgefüllt vor Beginn der Praxisphase beim Prüfungsamt eingereicht werden muss. Es ist zu beachten, dass erst bei Vorlage des vollständig ausgefüllten und von allen Beteiligten unterzeichneten Anmeldeformulars der Zeitraum für die Praxisphase anerkannt werden kann. Im Falle eines Auslandssemesters an einer ausländischen Hochschule wird das Formular „Anmeldung Praxisphase“ durch das „Learning Agreement“ ersetzt.
