The aesthetics of safety and security! “Carte blanche” for 3BM3 At AFG, we have a clear vision of building envelopes and interiors and of how security and aesthetics can be interlinked. But how do other professionals from the construction and real estate industry see it? What are their ideas of safe and secure infrastructure and of building safety and security in innovative architecture? In our “carte blanche”, we offer experts a platform to describe their visions independently of AFG. www.3bm3.ch Bénédicte Montant und Carmelo Stendardo, Gründer und Inhaber des Genfer Architekturbüros 3BM3. Geneva architecture firm 3BM3 is responsible for the construction of perhaps one of the most secure buildings in the world: Singapore Freeport, which was constructed in close proximity to the international airport of Singapore. This duty-free zone for storing art, gold and other goods provides showrooms and offices in addition to strongrooms. The owners of 3BM3, Carmelo Stendardo and Bénédicte Montant, tried to link formal tension with the highest security requirements. www.3bm3.ch Text: Bénédicte Montant und Carmelo Stendardo, 3BM3 Text: Bénédicte Montant and Carmelo Stendardo, 3BM3 Die gigantische Lobby im Singapore Freeport – inklusive martialisch anmutender Skulptur. The gigantic lobby in Singapore Freeport – including its monumental sculpture. Our project is based on security-related, legal, technical and functional requirements, but it transforms these into architectural qualities. A free port is more than a simple storage facility. It is a treasury for art that is characterised by temporary galleries and private showrooms. If we were to sum up the project concept in our own words, basically we did all we could to provide more than simply a high-security storage infrastructure. We designed a modular, high-security, hightech area with an architectural identity – simple on the outside, refined on the inside – that is harmonised as much as possible with the valuable articles stored within. A screen of vegetation for the façade The legal requirements served us as a pretext for a volumetric game. We set two main rules for this: 1. avoid the banality to be expected from a simple storage depot 2. allow formal tensions to develop Die technischen Vorgaben, insbesondere im Bereich Sicherheits technik waren gross. Dazu gehörten u.a. The technical requirements were enormous, especially in the area of security technology. These included monitoring of the exterior environment, access control, vibration and humidity detectors, infrared cameras, temperature and humidity control, incoming goods inspection using high-tech scanners, and so on. These prerequisites define the architectural character of the building: an almost windowless building envelope, light via glass slits, imposing entrance doors that weigh tonnes as well as highly efficient façades that stop too much heat from entering and also prevent the loss of the cool air generated within. The façade is furnished with a screen of vegetation that is shaded and protected by a fine, gold-coloured metal mesh, through which the building seems to vibrate and vary to the observer depending on humidity, light and time. Through the interplay of the metallic mesh wall, which is sometimes closer and sometimes further away from the building, the look of the façade vegetation can also vary. Enthusiastic view of the future The functional requirements inspired us to create a sort of elegant treasury that discreetly references the value of the stored goods. The life and the metamorphosis of the vegetation contribute to the vitality of the treasury. Thanks to the involvement of artists, the building refers to differences and similarities between architecture, art and design. The artists were included right from the project phase. This is how we managed to implement security in a way that is aesthetically suitable. We look to the future of architecture with enthusiasm – knowing how many obstacles have to be overcome time and again. New construction techniques, accompanied by the digital development of machines such as the 3D printer, encourage us to reconsider our profession and the unavoidable but exciting changes. As architects, we cannot leave topics like the energy issue unanswered, as we have a responsibility to society. We are actors in this development and not merely spectators.
