“Geo-engineering – Blessing or curse?”
We cordially invite you to a podium discussion with Hans Joachim Schellnhuber (PIK), Mark
Lawrence (IASS), Ken Caldeira (Stanford University), and Konrad Ott (Universität
Greifswald). The event will be held in English.
Geo-engineering aka climate engineering – the technological manipulation of our planet’s climate system
and oceans – could play a role in near-future strategies to reduce climate warming. Science has begun to
evaluate the potential risks and consequences to earth, atmosphere and human health. If we merely
scratch the surface of the debate, we also expose complex ethical issues. Moreover, if some start
believing that geo-engineering techniques are the quick and effortless solution to reducing global
warming, would they be assuming this as a reason for not having to follow through with the slower
strategies to reduce industrial and private carbon dioxide emissions? In what ways can policy regulate
research – and if it goes that far – how can it regulate the deployment of geo-engineering?

Ein neues Schlagwort bewegt die klimapolitische Debatte: „Geoengineering“ oder „Climate Engineering“ –
damit sind gezielte menschliche Eingriffe in das Klimasystem gemeint. Aber inwieweit ist die Menschheit in
der Lage, kontrollierbar Einfluss auf das Klima zu nehmen – und ist das ethisch vertretbar? Welche Risiken
sind mit den verschiedenen Ansätzen verbunden? Und wie kann die Forschung und gegebenenfalls ein
