The synthesis of a variety of amphiphilic and ionic dendrimers with fullerene-, calixarene- nanotube- and polyyne cores will be presented. Poly-anionic fullerene based dendrimers, carrying a defined number of negative charges were used for the hybridization of the eightfold positively charged redox protein cytochrome c. The corresponding coulomb complexes give rise to photoinduced electron transfer from the porphyrine donor of the protein to the fullerene acceptor.1 Layer-by-layer assemblies of these components allowed for the construction of switchable photo-diodes. The supramolecular organization of amphiphlic fullerene and calixarene based dendrimers such as 1 and 2 leads to new types of liposomes (buckysomes) and micelles. The buckysomes are composed of bilayers of 1 and form spontaneously in water. Their assembly and disassembly can be switched by changing the pH.2 The calixarene 2 represents the first example of an amphiphile which forms completely uniform and stable micelles. These C2-symmetric supramolecular architectures have a diameter of 7 nm and consist of exactly seven amphiphilic molecules. They represent the first prototype of micelles whose exact structure could be determined on the molecular level.
