Introduction to Regular Verbs Part 1 Deutsch 1 Frau Spampinato Infinitives • What is an infinitive? • Definition An infinitive is the base form of a verb; unconjugated form of the verb •All German verbs end with “-en” • heißen, kommen, sprechen, lesen, arbeiten, etc. ***Sein is irregular! It ends with “-n”, but not “-en” In English… • We drop the “to” from the infinitives, and sometimes we add certain endings: – Ex. • To play John plays. We play • To cook I cook. He cooks. (drop the to, but add no endings) • To be I am. You are. He is. irregular the verb is) (note how Regular Verbs • Follow a similar pattern • **Take infinitive, remove the “-en”, and add the following endings: – ich ____e wir ____en – du ____st ihr ____t – er_____t sie_____en – sie ____t Sie ____en – es _____t Zum Beispiel! • Take the verb “spielen” – to play – Ich spiele – Du spielst – Er/sie/es spielt wir spielen ihr spielt sie/Sie spielen • “hören” – to hear/listen – Ich höre – Du hörst – Er/sie/es hört wir hören ihr hört sie/Sie hören Examples! • Ich spiele Basketball. • Du hörst Musik. • Johann hört Musik, aber Margit spielt Hockey. • Johann und Margit spielen Gitarre. • Johann und ich spielen Gitarre. Slightly irregular, but still normal • Some verbs are regular, but they vary slightly from the rule due to pronunciation or spelling reasons: • heißen, arbeiten, tanzen heißen • To be called – ich heiße wir heißen – du heißt (notice, not heißst) ihr heißt – er/sie/es heißt sie/Sie heißen tanzen • To dance – ich tanze wir tanzen – du tanzt (not tanzst) ihr tanzt – er/sie/es tanzt sie/Sie tanzen arbeiten • Verbs like “arbeiten” whose stem ends in “t”—must add an extra “e” to make the pronunciation easier. You will learn more of these as we move along. • Also verbs that end in “n” or “d” – ich arbeite – du arbeitest – er/sie/es arbeitet wir arbeiten ihr arbeitet sie/Sie arbeiten Üben wir!
