Foreign Affairs – International Performing Arts Festival
Ausnahmezustand Festival: Theater, das ist die Ausnahme
vom Alltag – schon seit der Antike. 24 Stunden griechische
Tragödie in Jan Fabres monumentalem „Mount Olympus“
sind Ausgangspunkt für eine ganze Reihe von Projekten,
mit denen Foreign Affairs, das Sommerfestival der Berliner
Festspiele, unsere gesellschaftlichen Zeitregimes in Frage
stellt. Forced Entertainment spielen den ganzen Shake­speare,
das ganze Festival lang, Tino Sehgal fragt täglich vier Stunden nach unserem Verhältnis zum Fortschritt, und Ragnar
Kjartanssons Filminstallation lässt The National „Sorrow“
singen – sechs Stunden statt drei Minuten lang. Drumherum
und dazwischen wie jedes Jahr: Streetfood, Diskurs, Musik
– und Sommer! Ein Focus ist dieses Jahr der radikalen und
politischen Theaterarbeit der katalanischen Autorin und
Regisseurin Angélica Liddell gewidmet, zum Auftakt gibt
es nach vielen Jahren die Needcompany endlich wieder
mal in Berlin und zum Abschluss eine Uraufführung von
Hofesh Shechter. Good Times!
Festival time is a state of exception: Since ancient times, the theatre
has always been an exception from the mundane. The 24 hours of
ancient Greek tragedy featured in Jan Fabre’s monumental “Mount
Olympus” are a starting point for a series of projects in which Foreign
Affairs, Berliner Festspiele’s summer festival, challenges our society’s
time regimes. Forced Entertainment will present the complete works
of Shakespeare over the entire span of the festival. Tino Sehgal will
ask about our relationship with continual progress for four hours every
day, and The National will sing “Sorrow“ for Ragnar Kjartansson’s
film installation – for a whole six hours instead of three minutes.
And, like every year, in between and all around all these events, there
will be street food, discourse, music – and summer! One focus will be
dedicated to the radical and political theatre work of Catalan author
and director Angélica Liddell, for the festival’s opening, we will welcome Needcompany back to Berlin after many years and towards the
end there will be a world premiere of a new piece by Hofesh Shechter.

Mit „The Time Between Two Mistakes“ ist die Needcompany
nach vielen Jahren endlich wieder in Berlin zu sehen und feiert
mit uns die Festivaleröffnung. Dafür haben sie ihre Arbeiten
aus den vergangenen 30 Jahren gesichtet und darüber nachgedacht, wie und aus welchem Anlass Kunst heute entsteht.
Sie beleben starke Bilder wieder, interpretieren Songs neu,
laden das Publikum zum Feiern ein – und philosophieren darüber, was aus jenem Augenblick entspringen mag, der zwischen
zwei Fehlern liegt.
“The Time Between Two Mistakes” will mark Needcompany’s return to Berlin
after many years. They will celebrate with us the opening party of Foreign
Affairs. For this occasion, they looked through their works from the past 30
years and thought about how and when art is created today. They revive
strong images, re-interprete songs; they invite the audience to party along –
and to philosophise about everything that might arise from that moment
between two mistakes.

Mit „DEEP AEROBICS“ (Death Electric Emo Protest Aerobics)
hat der New Yorker Choreograf Miguel Gutierrez die WorkOut-Erfahrung erschaffen, nach der sich alle gesehnt haben.
Schon nach nur einem Abend mit Miguel bist du selbst ein
Meister-Guru! „DEEP AEROBICS“ ist keine Show, es ist eine
Bewegung aller Anwesenden, ein transformatives Erlebnis
für die geistig-körperlich-sinnlich-genitale Matrix.
With “DEEP AEROBICS” (Death Electric Emo Protest Aerobics), New Yorkbased choreographer Miguel Gutierrez has created the workout experience that everyone longed for. After only one evening with Miguel, you too
will be a Master Teacher! “DEEP AEROBICS” is not a show, it’s a movement,
it’s a transformative experience for the mindbodyspiritgenital matrix.

Sehgal arbeitet an einer radikalen Neubestimmung der
Kunst und ihrer Erfahrung, indem er Situationen anstatt
materieller Objekte konstruiert. In seinen Arbeiten untersucht er soziale Prozesse, kulturelle Konventionen und
Rollenverteilungen und bestimmt nicht nur die Kunstproduktion neu, sondern stellt auch fundamentale Werte
unseres Sozialsystems wie Nachhaltigkeit, Originalität
und Eigentum auf den Prüfstand. Parallel zu einer Ausstellung im Martin-Gropius-Bau, die weitere Arbeiten präsentiert, entwickelt Tino Sehgal für Foreign Affairs eine neue
Version von „This Progress“.
Sehgal seeks to reconfigure the conditions of art by producing meaning
and value through a transformation of actions rather than solid materials.
Consequently, throughout his works he explores social processes, cultural
conventions, and the allocation of roles, thereby not only redefining art
production but also reconsidering fundamental values of our social system,
including sustainability, originality, and ownership. Parallel to an exhibition
at Martin-Gropius-Bau that presents a number of his other works, for
Foreign Affairs Sehgal will develop a specific version of ”This Progress”.

Complete Works: Table Top Shakespeare
Die Idee ist so größenwahnsinnig wie bestechend. Der
ganze Shakespeare. Alle 36 Dramen. Erzählt von Forced
Entertainment. Und um es ein bisschen schwieriger zu
machen: pro Stück ein/e Performer*in, ein Tisch und ein
paar Alltagsgegenstände. Niemand erzählt so großartig,
prägnant und selbstironisch Geschichten auf der Bühne
wie die Company aus Sheffield.

Gemeinsam mit etwa 20 Berliner Musikern aus unterschiedlichen Kulturkreisen – Sufis, Juden, Christen,
Muslime – komponiert Georgia Sagri eine musikalische
und körperliche Performance, mit der sie sich mittels
Nachahmung und Wiederholung von Bewegungsritualen
bekannter Religionen auf den Weg begibt zu einem
vereinten zukünftigen Glaubenssystem.
Together with 20 musicians from Berlin from various religious backgrounds
– Sufis, Jews, Christians, Muslims – Georgia Sagri composes a new musical
and movement performance employing imitation and repetition of familiar
beliefs´ movements on a path towards a future unified belief system.

sechs Stunden lang. Wenn man wie Ragnar Kjartansson ein
Faible für Pop und Melancholie hat, fragt man anschließend
die Band (The National), ob sie den Song („Sorrow“) im
MoMA PS1 in New York sechs Stunden lang spielen und macht
einen Film daraus.
Here’s what happened: You meet someone and play them your current
favourite song, only to find out that it’s their favourite, too. Then you
listen to it forever – or at least for six hours. If you have a weakness for
pop music and melancholy, like Ragnar Kjartansson, then you might ask
the band (The National) to play the song (“Sorrow”) in New York’s MoMA
PS1 non-stop for six consecutive hours – and then you make a film about
the whole thing.

Selbst für den Grenzüberschreiter Jan Fabre ist das ein
Ausnahmeprojekt: 24 Stunden lang arbeiten sich 25
Performer*innen durch die Mythen der griechischen Antike.
Fabre trägt den Zuschauer in einem Bilderstrom durch
eine Choreografie zwischen Wachen und Schlafen, Traum
und Realität. Dabei begegnen einem Medea, Antigone,
Dionysos und andere Heroen in all ihrer Triebhaftigkeit und
Archaik. Für die nötigen Ruhepausen stehen Liegen im Foyer
und Zelte im Garten bereit. Die Taverne ist 24h geöffnet.

The Fall
Lesiones incompatibles con la vida
Ragnar Kjartanssons neue Arbeit basiert auf der Erinnerung an ein Ereignis im Jahr 1987: Kjartanssons Vater
kam völlig elektrisiert nach einer „Hamlet“-Aufführung
heim. Ein unerhörter Zwischenfall auf der Bühne hatte
die ganze Aufführung verändert. Das Erlebte versetzte
Kjartanssons Vater in eine Art Ekstase. Dieser Erinnerung ist „The Fall“ gewidmet, eine kinetische Skulptur
fürs Theater.
Ragnar Kjartansson’s latest work “The Fall” is based on the memory of an
event from 1987. Kjartansson’s father came home from a performance of
“Hamlet” in a state of great excitement. An outrageous incident on stage
had transformed the entire performance. Kjartansson’s father was transported into a kind of ecstasy by this experience. “The Fall” is dedicated to
this memory – a kinetic sculpture for the theatre.

Alles, was bei Angélica Liddell auf der Bühne zu sehen
ist, stammt von ihr selbst – sie ist Autorin, Regisseurin
und Performerin in Personalunion. Dieser Ausnahmekünstlerin, die mit ihren furiosen Performances schon
2013 und 2014 bei Foreign Affairs zu Gast war, ist ein
Focus mit drei ihrer Bühnenwerke gewidmet: Sowohl
„Primera carta de San Pablo...” als auch „You Are My
Destiny” stammen aus Liddells „Auferstehungszyklus”,
von dem 2014 bereits „Tandy” bei Foreign Affairs zu
sehen war. Ihre neueste Arbeit „Primera Carta de San
Pablo...” ist dem biblischen Hohelied der Liebe gewidmet,
„You Are My Destiny” der Schändung der Lucrezia, deren
Vergewaltigungsgeschichte Liddell so neu wie provokant auslegt. Mit „Lesiones incompatibles con la vida”
ist zudem ein frühes Werk eingeladen, entstanden zu
einer Zeit, als Liddell noch allein auf der Bühne stand.
„Via Lucis“, eine Lesung mit Irm Hermann und Altea
Garrido, und eine Filmbox mit Filmen, die Angélica Liddells
Arbeit inspirierten, vervollständigen den Focus.
Everything you see in a show by Angélica Liddell originates in herself – she
is the author, director and performer, all in one. After presenting her furious
performances in 2013 and 2014, Foreign Affairs will devote a focus programme
of three staged works to this exceptional artist: Both “Primera carta de
San Pablo...” and “You Are My Destiny” are part of Liddell’s “Resurrection
Cycle”, as is “Tandy”, which was presented at Foreign Affairs in 2014. Her
most recent work, “Carta de San Pablo...”, is dedicated to the biblical letter
of St. Paul on the theme of love. “You Are My Destiny” deals with the rape
of Lucrece and gives this story a new and provoking interpretation. “Lesiones
incompatibles con la vida” was created at a time when the artist was still
standing alone on stage, letting her body talk. “Via Lucis”, a reading by Irm
Hermann and Altea Garrido, and a series of films that inspired Angélica
Liddell’s work will complete the focus programme.

It’s an exceptional project, even for Jan Fabre with his great wealth of experience of crossing artistic frontiers: for 24 hours, 25 performers will act their
way through the myths of ancient Greece. On a stream of images, Fabre
will carry his spectators through a choreography between waking and sleeping, between dream and reality. We will meet Medea, Antigone, Dionysus
and other heroes in all their libidinosity and archaism.
There will be cots in the foyer and tents in the garden available for necessary
recuperation periods. The tavern is open 24h.

In „barbarians“ erschafft Hofesh Shechter eine karge Welt,
in der sich drei unterschiedliche Versionen von Intimität,
Leidenschaft und der Banalität der Liebe entfalten. Eleganz
und Intimität seiner Choreografie offenbaren sich in dem
verstörenden Stück „the barbarians in love“, mit dem der
Abend beginnt. Geistliche Barockmusik begleitet eine wahrhaft zeitgenössische Beichte – zitternd vor Emotion, die von
einer strikten Ordnung gehalten wird. Die beiden darauffolgenden neuen Stücke – eine Explosion aus Dubstep-Grooves
zu einer beinahe urbanen Choreografie und ein skurriles
Duett – vervollständigen einen Abend, der die einmalige,
ironische Stimme ihres Schöpfers und die Vielseitigkeit und
das Talent seiner einzelnen Tänzer*innen ins Licht rückt.
In “barbarians” Hofesh Shechter presents a sparse world for three wildly
different takes on intimacy, passion and the banality of love. Revealing
his choreography at its most elegant and intimate, the perturbing “the
barbarians in love” opens the evening. Trembling with emotion residing
within order, an ecclesiastic baroque score accompanies a truly contemporary confession. What follows, as two more new works unfold, is a
volatile explosion of dubstep grooves for an almost urban choreography
and a quirky duet which together complete an evening showcasing the
singular and wry voice of their creator and the versatility and talent of
his individual dancers.
