Negation
• The word kein means “no” or “not any” and
negates nouns.
Ich habe kein Buch. (I have no book.)
Ich habe keine Zeit. (I don’t have any time.
I have no time.)
• The endings of kein are identical to those
of ein-words.
• Peter kauft eine Gitarre.
• Peter kauft keine Gitarre.
• Hast du einen Bleistift?
• Nein, ich habe keinen Bleistift.
• Let’s practice negating the following
sentences:
• 1. Petra hat eine Jacke.
• 2. Ich bringe ein Video mit.
• 3. Vati kauf einen neuen Fussball.
• 1. Petra hat keine Jacke.
• 2. Ich bringe kein Video mit.
• 3. Vati kauf keinen neuen Fussball.
• The word nicht means “not” and negates
verbs.
• David schreib nicht.
• Carola will nicht die Arbeit machen.
• When negating a verb, nicht is usually
placed after the verb.
• Example:
• Paula geht in die Stadt.
• Paula geht nicht in die Stadt.
• Herman ist neun Jahre alt.
• Sabine ist nicht neun Jahre alt.
