Den Wandel vordenken | Planning For Change
Wir befeuern Ideen. Gebäude für neue Denkweisen, für
kreative Gelegenheiten und Kontakte, waren für RKW einer
der Schwerpunkte des Jahres 2014. Das Projekt Halle 90 B
für Volkswagen ist hierfür ein Musterbeispiel. Es beinhaltet
das neue Zentrum für die Entwicklung der E-Mobilität des
Automobilkonzerns und verbindet vielfältige Arbeitsbereiche
erstmals miteinander. Seine Architektur fördert Disziplinen
übergreifende Begegnungen, die zum Ursprung neuer Ideen
werden können.
Wir bringen Menschen zusammen. Kommunikation ist
nicht nur der wesentliche Faktor bei der Generierung von
Ideen, sondern auch bei der Vermittlung von Wissen.
RKW hat in 2014 den Campus Lippstadt der neugegründe-ten FH Hamm-Lippstadt fertiggestellt. Auch hier lag der
Schwerpunkt auf der Schaffung einer Atmosphäre, die den
Austausch zwischen Menschen fördert – auf ebenso konstruktive wie angenehme Weise. Ähnlich angenehm sind
auch die modernen Arbeitswelten im Panta Rhei, einem der
gewiss spektakulärsten Bürogebäude unserer Heimatstadt
Düsseldorf. Das amorphe, weiße Gebäude wurde in 2014
eröffnet und ist eine Landmarke der Airport City geworden.
Wir erzeugen (Lebens-)Werte. Neben den Gebäuden für
Auftraggeber aus Industrie und öffentlicher Hand, neben
Schulen, Sporthallen oder Einkaufszentren, hat RKW auch in
2014 eine Vielzahl von Wohngebäuden fertiggestellt. Hier hält
der Trend nach hochwertigem Wohnraum in urbaner Lage
unvermindert an – zurück in die Stadt, mit zeitlos werthaltigen Immobilien. Auch hier zeigt sich der hohe Anspruch von
RKW: Wir nutzen große Erfahrung und modernste Instrumente, um Gebäude zu konzipieren und realisieren, die auch
in Zukunft noch reibungslos funktionieren und ihre Anziehungskraft behalten. Mit unseren Generationen übergreifenden,

Building for the Knowledge Society.
Es ist mehr als Fortschritt – wir erleben derzeit den Beginn
einer neuen Epoche. Die drei wesentlichen Zivilisationsfaktoren Energie, Mobilität und Kommunikation sind im
Umbruch begriffen, mit dem Aufschwung der erneuerbaren
Energien, der Elektromobilität und der schon heute permanenten Informationsverfügbarkeit. Das Zeitalter der Wissensgesellschaft hat begonnen.

The three significant factors of civilisation:
energy, mobility and communication are
in a state of radical change, with the rise
of renewable energies, electro-mobility
and today’s continuous availability of information. The age of the information society
has begun.
Als Architekten begleiten wir diese neue Gesellschaftsform,
in der Wissen keine kollektive, sondern eine höchst individuelle Größe ist. Längst bauen wir dieser Gesellschaft
nicht einfach nur Hüllen und Fassaden. Vielmehr entwickeln
wir Gebäude wie fein gestimmte Instrumente oder hoch
komplexe, reibungslos funktionierende Werkzeuge. Ob für
Forschung und Entwicklung in der Industrie, oder für Wissenschaft und Lehre in den Hochschulen – bei der Planung
dieser Orte gilt es, Kommunikation und zufällige Begegnungen und damit Kreativität systematisch zu planen und
zu fördern. So bringen wir das Wissen zurück ins Kollektiv –
zum Wohle aller. Darüber hinaus nutzen wir professionelle
Instrumente, die für die präzise Einhaltung von Kosten und
Terminen garantieren.

Schon von weitem ein starkes Zeichen: Auf dem Werksareal
der F/E (Forschung und Entwicklung) der Volkswagen AG
in Wolfsburg hat RKW ein Gebäude realisiert, das nicht nur
Qualitäten als Landmarke besitzt. Vielmehr sind es auch
die „inneren Werte“, die die Halle 90 B zu einer besonderen
Immobilie machen, einem jüngsten Beispiel für eine ganz
grundsätzliche RKW-Philosophie bei der Entwicklung und
Gestaltung von Forschungsbauten. Ihr Prinzip ist einfach,
einfach umzusetzen ist es jedoch nicht: Forschung ist Begegnung und permanenter Dialog von Menschen. Wer
Technologieforschung betreibt, sollte also vor allem auf
Menschen setzen, die aus unterschiedlichsten Fachbereichen kommen, verschiedenste Kompetenzen mitbringen
und sich in einer kreativen Atmosphäre treffen. Konkret
hieß das für den Kunden Volkswagen, dass ein Gebäude
geschaffen wurde, in dem die Entwicklerteams der Elektronik-Entwicklung nun räumlich konsolidiert werden, die
vorher über das Werksareal verstreut gearbeitet hatten.

Even seen from afar, it is a powerful symbol:
On the business premises of F/E (Forschung und Entwicklung, Research & Development) of Volkswagen AG in Wolfsburg,
RKW realised a building that does not only
have the qualities of a landmark. On the
contrary, it is also the “inner values” that
make Hall 90 B a very special building, one
of the latest examples of a quite fundamental RKW philosophy for the development
and design of research buildings. Its principle is simple, but it is not easy to implement:
research implies encounters and a permanent dialogue between people. For that
reason, those who are active in technology
research should rely in the first place on
people from a wide variety of specialist fields,
dispose of a wide variety of competencies
and meet in a creative atmosphere. For the
client Volkswagen in particular, this meant
that a building was created where the

beherbergt das Zentrum für Elektrik-Elektronikkompetenz
und bildet damit den neuen Auftakt des sogenannten
E-Campus. Lang und schmal ist die lineare Gebäudeform,
die das Grundstück mit einer Größe von 145 mal 35 Metern
optimal ausnutzt. Dafür lässt das Bauwerk jeweils doppelstöckige Versprünge kaskadenartig und optisch spektakulär
nach Norden und Westen auskragen. Im Inneren setzen
sich diese Versprünge fort – entlang eines über die ganze
Gebäudelänge durchgehenden Luftraums, der Magistrale,
entsteht eine sich nach oben öffnende Terrassenlandschaft
mit optimaler Belichtung der innenliegenden Büroflächen.

on the premises of the automobile group.
The building houses the centre for electricelectronic competence and therefore
constitutes the new start for the so-called
E-campus. The linear shape of the building
is long and narrow, and it makes optimum
use of the plot with a size of 145 × 35 metres.
For that purpose, two-storey protrusions

Noch wichtiger aber: Schon die räumliche Struktur sorgt
für spannende Sichtbeziehungen und gestärkte Verbindungen zwischen einzelnen Funktionseinheiten. Seitenblicke
in alle öffentlichen Bereiche sind hier erlaubt und werden
unterstützt. Maßgeblich für den Entwurf ist eine hohe
horizontale wie vertikale Vernetzung der Labore und Prüfstände mit den Büros der Entwickler, deren Anordnung
sich an der Kooperationsdichte untereinander orientiert.
Die Besprechungsräume sind – ebenfalls im Zeichen größtmöglicher Vernetzung – zentral um die Treppenhäuser
und die Halle angeordnet, so dass die Orientierung leicht
fällt und Wege so kurz wie möglich sind.

optimum interconnectivity – centrally arranged around the staircases and the hall
in order to make it easy for people to find
their way around and to keep the distances
they have to cover as short as possible.

Kommunikatives Kompetenzzentrum
Communicative competence centre
Endgültig zum offenen und kommunikativen Kompetenzzentrum wird die Halle 90 B jedoch durch die innere Halle,
welche die ganze Länge des Gebäudes durchzieht und
alle Bürogeschosse miteinander verbindet. Sie beginnt im
2. OG, liegt sozusagen auf den beiden darunterliegenden
Werkstatt- und Prüfstandsgeschossen auf. Die Erschließung
der Magistrale erfolgt, neben den fünf Treppenhäusern
und der zentralen Aufzugsanlage im Süden, mittels einer
17 Meter langen Rolltreppe und einer repräsentativen Treppenanlage, dem sogenanntem Wolf. Beide stellen die direkte
und unmittelbare Anbindung an das Herz der F/E im Westen
her. In der Magistrale werden unter anderem die Kantine,
die Cafeteria, das AMI-Labor, Besprechungsräume und die
Poolarbeitsplätze auf direktem Weg erschlossen. Mit ihrer
ungehinderten Offenheit in der Länge und Höhe des Gebäudes und durch ihre Funktion als soziale Hauptschlagader
verkörpert die Magistrale die Grundidee des Gebäudes –
hier ist Raum für Begegnungen und Austausch, nicht nur
zwischen Profis verschiedener Disziplinen, sondern ganz
einfach auch zwischen Menschen.

des Schaffens neuer Verbindungen mit einer selbstverständlichen Leichtigkeit um. Die Architekten von RKW konnten
hier ihr Know-how aus vielfältigen Bauprojekten für Technologieunternehmen aus Automobilbranche, Luftfahrtindustrie
oder Elektronik-Hightech einbringen und wiederum zu etwas
Neuem weiterentwickeln. Als Leuchtturmprojekt verinnerlicht die Halle 90 B die neue Auffassung von Kreativität durch
Vernetzung und entwickelt daraus ihre Stärken – sie ist
eine Antwort auf die Herausforderungen einer neuen Wissensgesellschaft.

all office floors. It begins on the second
floor, lies on top of the two workshop and
test bench levels underneath it, so to say.
The opening up of the main thoroughfare
is realised, in addition to the five staircases
and the central lift system in the south,
by means of a 17-metre moving staircase
and a representative staircase system,
the so-called wolf. Both ensure a direct and
immediate connection to the heart of the
F/E in the west. By way of the main thoroughfare, the canteen, the cafeteria, the AMI
lab, conference rooms and the pool workstations, among others, can be reached
directly. With its unobstructed openness
regarding the length and height of the
building and its function as the main social
artery, the main thoroughfare represents
the basic idea of the building – there is space
for encounters and exchange here, not
only between pros working in different disciplines, but quite simply between people.
Additional elements of the building are
automobile-specific: Via gate systems in
the north facade, vehicles can enter the
workshop floor and can be transported, for
example, to the lab and hall level by way
of a freight elevator. The lab and test bench
area can be divided up flexibly thanks
to its linear principle of arrangement, and
it provides for a great degree of clarity.
As a result, the building in its entirety
fulfils the task of creating new connections
with a natural ease. Here the architects
from RKW were able to contribute their
know-how from a wide variety of construction projects for technology firms from
the automotive industry, the aeronautics
industry or electronic high-tech, and to
develop it further into something new again.
As a lighthouse project, Hall 90 B embodies
the new idea of creativity based on networking and develops its strengths from
that – it is an answer to the challenges of
a new information society.

Ein einzigartiges Gebäude, etwas, was es in Düsseldorf noch
nicht gibt: Der Wunsch des damaligen Oberbürgermeisters
Joachim Erwin nach einem „architektonischen Feuerwerk“
war eine ausdrückliche Einladung zur Kreativität. Auf einem
Kopfgrundstück der Düsseldorf Airport City sollte ein Bürogebäude entstehen, das auffällt und einen starken Auftakt
für den florierenden Businesspark bildet, der dort nur fünf
Fußminuten vom Check-in entfernt liegt. Anfang des Jahres
stellte RKW dort das Panta Rhei fertig – die altgriechische
Weisheit „Alles fließt“ gab dem Gebäude seinen Namen. Und
„Alles fließt“ ist auch die gestalterische Grundidee, mit der
das strahlend weiße, skulpturale Bauwerk eine Zeichenhaftigkeit gewinnt, die es aus der umliegenden Blockstruktur ausbrechen lässt.
Seine Form ist mäandrierend, fast amorph. Einerseits erinnert
sie an die berühmte Vase von Alvar Aalto, andererseits
nimmt sie die sanften Kurven des nahegelegenen Rheins
auf, der Lebensader der Region. Die absolute Weichheit
dieser ungewöhnlichen Erscheinung sorgt für einen großen
Wiederkennungswert, der sogar aus der Luft funktioniert:
Schon im Anflug auf Düsseldorf ist das Gebäude als Landmarke zu erkennen, die im Übrigen auch mit dem benachbarten und schon vor dem Panta Rhei realisierten Park und
seinen Teichen harmoniert.

OFFICE BUILDING
A unique building, one of a kind, something
completely new for Dusseldorf: The former
mayor, Joachim Erwin, had expressed his
wish for “architectural fireworks”, which was
an express invitation to get creative. On
a terminal plot of Dusseldorf Airport City,
an office building was to be built, and it
was to constitute a powerful start for the
flourishing business park located there
only a five-minute walk from check-in. At
the beginning of the year, RKW completed
the Panta Rhei there – the ancient Greek
saying “everything flows” gave the building
its name. And “everything flows” is also
the fundamental design concept based on
which the pearly-white sculptural building gains a symbolism that sets it apart from
the surrounding block structure.
Its shape is meandering, almost amorphous.
On the one hand, it reminds you of the
famous vase made by Alvar Aalto, and on
the other hand, it echoes the soft curves
of the nearby Rhine, the lifeline of the
region. The absolute smoothness of this
extraordinary structure provides for a
great recognition value which even works
from the air: When approaching Düsseldorf
by plane, you can see the building as
a landmark, which is otherwise also in harmony with the adjacent park and its ponds
already realised before the Panta Rhei.

Um die homogene, weiche Form der Fassade herzustellen,
griffen die RKW-Architekten zu einigen technischen Finessen.
So wurden zum einen geriffelte Bleche für die Fassade
verwendet, die so miteinander verzahnt sind, dass kein Anfang und kein Ende wahrnehmbar ist. Auch durch eine
zwischen die jeweils polygonalen Fenster gesetzte Schwerterstruktur wurde die Wahrnehmung der Fassadenbiegung
noch optisch verstärkt. Zusätzlich wurde das gängige Raster

eine zentrale Rolle: Moderne kosten- und energieeffiziente
Heiz-/Kühldecken, ein außenliegender elektrischer Sonnenschutz und mechanische Be- und Entlüftungsanlagen
sorgen für bestmögliche Energie- und Kosteneffizienz. Eine
Zertifizierung nach dem LEED-Standard in Gold wird für
das Gebäude angestrebt.

In order to realise the homogenous, smooth
shape of the facade, the RKW architects
resorted to a few technological refinements.
On the one hand, corrugated sheet metal
was used for the facade, and the elements
are interconnected in such way that you
see no beginning and no end. A brace structure placed between the polygonal windows also reinforces the perception of the
visual facade curvature even more. In
addition, the common 1.35-metre grid was
partially cut in half in order to make the
bends even smoother and more delicate.
The canopies above the entrance doors
also emerge just cautiously from the facade
in order to achieve an optimum aesthetic
effect.
In addition to the form, however, the function of the building plays a central role
as well: Modern cost- and energy-efficient
heating /cooling ceilings, an exterior electrical sun protection system and mechanic
ventilation and venting systems ensure
optimum energy and cost efficiency. They
aim at certification according to the LEED
standard in gold for the building.

Nach der Realisierung des Gebäudes wurde RKW von
einem der neuen Mieter auch mit dem Ausbau des 4. Obergeschosses beauftragt. Die Intersnack Group ließ sich die
Etage als Hauptgeschäftssitz gestalten. Ziel des innenarchitektonischen Entwurfs von RKW war es, die außergewöhnliche
Wellenform des Panta Rhei auch im Innenraum ablesbar zu
machen. Dazu folgen die Flurwände, die durch großzügige
Glaselemente aufgelöst werden, wie auch die Bodenbeläge
und die Form des zentralen Erschließungskerns weitgehend
der dynamischen Form der Fassade.

Unter Berücksichtigung der CI-Vorgaben des Bauherrn
wurde speziell der Empfangsbereich in Szene gesetzt. Der
Besucher verlässt hier die zentral gelegene Aufzugsgruppe
und erreicht den Erschließungskern, der mit einer hochstrapazierfähigen Folie in der Firmenfarbe Rot bezogen ist. In
Augenhöhe verläuft hier ein Lichtband, das die Kernkompetenzen des Unternehmens darstellt und auch einen integrierten Touchscreen zur interaktiven Selbstinformation bietet.
Vis-á-vis des Eingangs befindet sich die Warte- und Aufenthaltszone für Besucher und Mitarbeiter mit einer Kaffeebar zur Selbstbedienung. Das Serviceelement beinhaltet
zwei große, rahmenlose Vitrinen, deren Rückwand aus einer
beschreibbaren Magnetfläche besteht. Hier werden Informationen zu neuen Produkten vermittelt oder die Produkte
selbst ausgestellt.

the dynamic form of the facade for the
most part.
Taking into consideration the builderowner’s CI specifications, the reception
area was staged in a special way. Here,
visitors leave the centrally located elevator
group and reach the infrastructural core
which is covered with a heavy-duty foil in the
corporate colour red. On eye level, a line
of ribbon windows is integrated here, which
presents the core competencies of the
company, and there is also a touch screen
for an interactive information system. Visà-vis the entrance, there is the waiting and
lounge zone for visitors and employees,
with a self-service coffee bar. The service
element comprises two large, frameless
showcases with a rear panel made of

im Ostflügel vor dem großen Konferenzraum. Hier finden
sich Sitzgelegenheiten für rund 40 Konferenzteilnehmer oder
Mitarbeiter als Kommunikations- und Pausenzone. Besonders herausfordernd war die Umsetzung der Konferenzräume,
nicht nur aufgrund der Gebäudeform sondern auch der
vom Mieter geforderten Personenzahl, die untergebracht werden sollte. Zusätzliche Raumluft- und Kühltechnik sowie
aufwändige Medientechnik mussten integriert werden. Dafür
wurde eine akustisch wirksame, mit Kühlmäandern belegte
Streckmetalldecke als Spiegel der Tischkonfiguration abgependelt. Die Decke nimmt die Klimatechnik und das Beleuchtungskonzept aus direkter und indirekter Beleuchtung, sowie
diverse medientechnische Komponenten auf. So tritt die
Technik zugunsten eines makellosen Gesamteindrucks in den
Hintergrund – damit auch im Innenraum des Panta Rhei
alles fließt.

conference room. There are seats for
approximately 40 conference attendees
or employees as a communication and
break area here. The realisation of the conference rooms presented a special challenge, not only because of the shape of the
building, but also because of the number
of people to be accommodated that had
been requested by the tenant. Additional
air conditioning and cooling equipment
as well as sophisticated media equipment
had to be integrated. For that purpose,
an acoustic, expanded-metal ceiling with
cooling meanders attached to it was
suspended to mirror the table configuration.
The ceiling houses the air conditioning
system and the lighting concept based on
direct and indirect lighting as well as various media technology components. As
a result, technology takes a backseat in
favour of a perfect overall impression –
to let everything flow inside the Panta Rhei
as well.

Hochschule Hamm-Lippstadt. Standort Lippstadt
Mit der feierlichen Eröffnung im Juni 2014 wurde der Campus
einer komplett neugegründeten Hochschule für NordrheinWestfalen offiziell eingeweiht. Um einen von vier neuen FHStandorten hatten sich die Städte Hamm und Lippstadt
gemeinsam beworben und den Zuschlag für eine Hochschule
mit zwei Campus-Arealen erhalten. Den internationalen
Wettbewerb für die Entwicklung des Campus Lippstadt entschied RKW im September 2010 für sich und realisierte
einen ebenso naturnahen wie technologieorientierten Entwurf.

benachbarten Automobil-Zulieferer Hella gehört, mit dem
die FH als technische Hochschule auch kooperiert. Nördlich
grenzt es an eine weitläufige Auenlandschaft der Lippe,
aufgrund seiner natürlichen Schönheit trug das Areal den
Namen „Himmelreich“. Hier errichteten die Architekten
ein Ensemble aus vier Gebäuden, die sich um einen zentralen Platz gruppieren. Das Leitmotiv des Entwurfs ist Kommunikation. Wo und wie kommen die Studenten, Professoren
und Besucher zusammen? So erhält der Platz eine große
Bedeutung als sozialer Mittelpunkt des Campus, die Verteilung der verschiedenen Funktionen auf die Gebäude führt
automatisch zu seiner Belebung. Das Thema Begegnung
wird auch in die jeweiligen Innenräume weitergetragen, jedes
Gebäude verfügt dazu über großzügige Foyers, die auch
als Ausstellungsflächen dienen und Innen- und Außenbereich
fast fließend verbinden.

an extensive pasture landscape of the Lippe
River, and because of its natural beauty,
the area was referred to as “Kingdom of
Heaven“. Here the architects built an ensemble comprising four buildings arranged
around a central square. The leitmotiv
of the design is communication. Where and
how do students, professors and visitors
meet? In that way, the square is of major
importance as the social centre of the
campus, the distribution of the different
functions to the buildings automatically
makes it a lively place. The topic of encounters is also passed on to the respective
interior spaces, and in addition, each building has a large entrance hall also used
as exhibition space, and these constitute
a rather smooth connection between the
interior and the exterior.

Die vier Baukörper sind zwei- oder dreigeschossig und in
ihrer ganzen Ausprägung horizontal angelegt. So fügen
sie sich in die besonders nach Norden hin freie und weitläufige Naturlandschaft harmonisch ein. Auch besitzen
die beiden nördlichen, U-förmigen Gebäude begrünte Innenhöfe, die sich in Richtung der Lippeauen öffnen. Die verschiedenen Nutzungen der vier Gebäude beinhalten Mensa
und Verwaltung mit einem Studenten-Service-Center, Bibliotheks- und Hörsaalzentrum sowie die Verwendungen als
Institutsgebäude mit Laboren, Werkstätten und den Departments. Neben diesen Hauptfunktionen sind überall auch
gesonderte Flächen für studentisches Lernen mit unterschiedlichen Qualitäten angeordnet, von informellen Treffpunkten und Sofalounges bis zu Gruppenarbeitsplätzen
oder ruhigen Studierorten in der Mediathek.

Besonderes Augenmerk galt der Gestaltung der Gebäudeoberflächen. So wurde für die Fassaden ein Wechsel
zwischen massigen Ziegelflächen, Panoramaglasöffnungen
und horizontalen Fensterbändern entwickelt. Ein heller,
sandfarbener Klinker bringt durch seine leicht changierende
Struktur und Farbe eine Natürlichkeit auf den sonst durch
Technik geprägten Campus. Als Gegenpol zu Werkstätten
und Elektroniklaboren schafft das Material Stein einen
lichten und leichten Gesamteindruck. Davon setzen sich die
Fensteröffnungen mit ihrer mattschwarzen Einfassung kontrastreich ab, während zurückspringende Eingangsebenen
und verklinkerte Innenhöfe die Materialität der Ziegel bis tief
in die Gebäude wirken lassen.
Special attention was paid to the design
of the building surfaces. For the facade,
a change between solid brick surfaces,
panoramic glass openings and horizontal
ribbon windows was developed. The
slightly iridescent structure and colour of
a light, sand-coloured Dutch clinker brings
naturalness in the campus that is otherwise
characterised by technology. As an antithesis to workshops and electronic labs,
the material stone creates a luminous
and light-weight overall impression. The
window openings with their matt black
bordering contrast strongly with that, while
set-back entrance levels and clinker-clad
patios bring into effect the materiality of the
bricks deep into the building.

Auch die Innenräume wurden bewusst reduziert gehalten,
als technische Hochschule soll hier eine konzentrierte Atmosphäre herrschen. So greift auch das Farb- und Materialkonzept die Hochschulthemen assoziativ auf: Elektro- und
Motorentechnik, Farben von Alugussteilen oder Kabeln, eher
technische oder neutrale Materialien wie Sichtbeton, Aluminium, sowie der Verzicht auf das Verbergen von Installationen – die Gebäudetechnik soll erkennbar bleiben. Einen
Kontrast dazu bieten die sogenannten „Farbduschen“ – etwa
Windfänge, die von Boden bis Decke in kräftigem Orange
gehalten sind, oder komplett grüne Treppenhäuser. Auch gibt
es Hörsäle mit einheitlich roten Stühlen, Tischen und umgebendem Fußboden in kräftigem Rot. Diese kurzen Farbimpulse wirken belebend und sorgen für Abwechslung.
Schon vor der offiziellen Eröffnung ging der Campus Lippstadt im März 2014 genau wie geplant in Komplettbetrieb.
Dafür sorgte auch das RKW-Baumanagement, das die
Insolvenz eines der beiden Generalunternehmer erfolgreich
kompensieren konnte. Inzwischen haben die ersten von bis
zu 2.000 Studierenden in hochspezialisierten Studiengängen
wie etwa Computervisualistik, Materialdesign für Bionik &
Photonik oder Soziale Medien und Kommunikationsinformatik – und natürlich ihre Dozentinnen und Dozenten – auf
dem Campus beste Lernbedingungen gefunden.

The interior spaces were also kept intentionally simple in order to create a focussed
atmosphere inside the polytechnic university. The colour and material concept also
picks up on the university topics in an associative manner: electrical and motor
engineering, colours of cast aluminium parts
or cables, materials that are rather technical or neutral such as exposed concrete,
aluminium, and no hiding of installations –
it was intended to keep the building services visible. In contrast to that, there are
the so-called “colour showers” – for example vestibules painted in bright orange
from floor to ceiling, or staircases completely in green. There are also lecture halls
with all chairs, desks and the floor around
them in a bright red. These occasional
splashes of colour have a refreshing effect
and provide for variety.
Even before its official inauguration, full
operation was started on Campus Lippstadt in March 2014 exactly as scheduled.
This was also made possible by the RKW
construction management, which was able
to compensate successfully for the insolvency of one of the two general contractors
as well. In the meantime, the first of up
to 2,000 students — and their lecturers too
as a matter of course — have found ideal
conditions for studying on the campus in
highly specialised fields of study such
as computer visualistics, material design
for bionics & photonics or social media
and communication information science.

Hotelbau | Hotel building
Motel One, Fassadensanierung. Leipzig
Sie gehört zu den 25 umsatzstärksten Einkaufsstraßen
Deutschlands: die Grimmaische Straße in Leipzig. Unmittelbar zwischen Nikolaikirche und Opernhaus wurde hier ein
60er-Jahre-Bau durch ein neues Geschäftshaus mit Hotelnutzung in den oberen Stockwerken ersetzt. Um dieser
prominenten Adresse gerecht zu werden, war eine Fassade
gefragt, die sich harmonisch einfügt und gleichzeitig absolut
eigenständig ist. Einen entsprechenden Wettbewerb konnte
RKW Leipzig 2011 für sich entscheiden. So realisierten die
Architekten eine Außenhaut, die die ornamentale Ästhetik
historischer Gebäude mit der strukturellen Logik der Moderne
verbindet – zu einem Muster aus Fenstern und plastisch
gefalteten Wandflächen. Auf dieser Struktur können Licht und
Schatten spielen und erzeugen ein lebendiges, variierendes
Bild. Technisch gelöst wurde die Aufgabe mit warm-weiß
eingefärbten Sichtbetonfertigteilen, die im Traufbereich mit
integrierten LED-Modulen ausgestattet sind. Sie wurden
in einem lokalen Werk mittels Matrizen gefertigt. So konnte
die geplante Geometrie präzise aus Faserbeton hergestellt
werden.
Die Schaufenster im EG und 1. OG erhielten eine PfostenRiegel-Konstruktion, die Fenster der Obergeschosse wurden
mit Metallrahmenprofilen ausgeführt. Um einen Kontrast
zum hellen Beton herzustellen, sind alle Fensterprofile matt
und gussgrau beschichtet. Für eine dem hochwertigen
Gesamteindruck angemessene Werbung für die Handelsangebote im EG wurden hinterleuchtete Einzelbuchstaben
gewählt. Freigestellte und ebenfalls hinterleuchtete Einzelbuchstaben vor einer schrägen Wandfläche bilden ein
markantes Gebäudesignet an der Ecke zur Ritterstraße. Mit
dem Gewinn des Wettbewerbs erhielt RKW die Aufgabe
der Fassadenplanung, die im weiteren Projektverlauf um die
Ausführungsplanung für das gesamte Gebäude als Hotel
und Geschäftshaus ergänzt wurde.

durch formale Nähe zum Schiffbau aus. Die horizontale
Gestalt hebt sich mit ihrem plastischen Äußeren vom Umfeld ab und besteht auch in der direkten Nachbarschaft
zu den markanten Kranhäusern. Dabei hilft die Materialwahl:

Rheinauhafen is noticeable for its ship-like form. The horizontal
shape rises with sculptural lines from the surroundings and positions itself close to the iconic “Kranhäuser” (crane houses). The
choice of materials plays a part: bright aluminium panels and large
glass areas with powder-coated frames. All the apartments in the
building have large private balconies and loggias. Exclusive living
space is provided on the penthouse floor with three comfortable
residences and large roof terraces. The ground floor, on the other
hand, provides attractive areas for a lively urbane restaurant and
retail scene in a prominent location. With this building, RKW fills the
last gap in Rheinauhafen, which now forms the new face of the
metropolis on the waterfront. This is precisely the right anchorage
for this building.

Das Besondere erhalten: In der Altstadt der fränkischen
Kreisstadt Forchheim liegt ein ehemaliges Brauhaus mit turmartigem Sudhaus und historischem Giebel. Im Zuge eines
Gutachterverfahrens für eine neue Nutzung entstand ein
Entwurf von RKW Leipzig. Dieser integriert die charakterbildenden Bausteine Turm und Giebel in das neue BrauhausCarrée, einen hochwertigen Wohnstandort. Das Gebäudeensemble öffnet sich im Bereich Badstraße zu einem Innenhof
mit umlaufenden Laubengängen – dem Herzstück der Anlage. Die Stützen der Laubengänge sind aus ortstypischem
Sandstein, ebenso die Einfassungen der Loggien in den
Putzfassaden, die als Rückzugsorte dienen. Mit diesen Materialien und dem behutsamen Umgang mit der Substanz
gelingt ein Brückenschlag: Das Brauhaus-Carrée erhält die
Geschichte des Ortes und lässt dennoch eine zukunftsgewandte Adresse in Forchheim entstehen. Dafür zeichnete
die Jury den Entwurf mit dem 1. Preis aus.
Die Lene-Voigt-Schule in Leipzig-Lößnig ist eine Mittelschule in einem Plattenbau aus den 1970er-Jahren. Eine
Ertüchtigung des Gebäudes und teilweiser Umbau waren
nötig – unter Wahrung eines engen Kostenrahmens. Darunter
fielen die Sanierung der Gebäudehülle, der Anbau eines
Aufzugs, die Erneuerung der Elektrik- und Sanitäranlagen
sowie eine Brandschutzertüchtigung. Die Eingänge und
Treppenhäuser bekamen zur Hofseite eine gebäudehohe Verglasung, gegliedert durch liegende Fenster und farbige
Paneele, die einem durchgängigen Konzept aus Orange und
Rot entsprechen. Diese Farben werden den beiden Schülereingängen zugeordnet und finden sich jeweils in der Fassade,
den Glaspaneelen und den Treppenhäusern wieder. Innen
vermischen sie sich im spielerischen Wechsel an Boden und
Decke, während die übrigen Flächen in hellen Farben gestaltet
sind. Das Budget wurde präzise eingehalten und ein motivierendes Ergebnis für Schüler und Lehrpersonal erreicht.

The Lene Voigt School in Leipzig-Lößnig is a middle school built
with precast panels during the 1970s. The building required renovation and a partial redesign – within a tight cost frame. The plans
included refurbishing the building envelope, lift installation, renewing the electrical and sanitary systems, and upgrading the fire
protection system. The entrances to the stairwells were glazed to
their full height on the courtyard side, articulated by end-on windows
and coloured panels within a consistent concept of orange and
red. These colours are applied to both student entrances and reappear in the facade, the glass panels and the stairwells. Inside,
a playful mixture of these colours is used on the floor and ceiling,
while the remaining surfaces are finished in bright colours. The
works were completed precisely to budget and created a motivational atmosphere for the students and teachers.
Retaining the special: in the old town area of the Frankonian regional town of Forchheim is a former brewery with a tower-shaped
fermentation house and a historic gable. A design by RKW Leipzig
formed part of an expert report considering a proposed new use.
This design integrated the characteristic tower and gable into the
Brauhaus-Carrée, an up-market residential development. The
building ensemble opens towards Badstrasse into an internal courtyard with surrounding access balconies – the heart of the complex.
The columns supporting the access balconies are in local sandstone
as are the facings to the loggias, which provide places of retreat
in the rendered facades. The use of these materials and the careful
treatment of the existing building fabric create the necessary
bridge: the Brauhaus-Carrée housing development retains the history
of the site yet is regarded as a forward-looking location in Forchheim.

unmittelbaren Nachbarschaft, zu der auch das eigene Büro
gehört. Für den Nutzer KPMG entwickelt, basiert das B.O.C.
auf einer kammartigen Struktur, die es nicht nur mit dem
Nachbargebäude verzahnt, sondern möglichst viele Ausblicke
und Verbindungen in die Außenwelt entstehen lässt.
In seinem Inneren ist der Baukörper klar strukturiert und wird
von prägenden Achsen wie der repräsentativen Magistrale
im Erdgeschoss bestimmt. Hinter dem Empfang bietet sie ein
Bistro und eine Folge von Konferenzräumen mit Parkblick.
Die Magistralen in den Obergeschossen sind hingegen Hauptachsen für den Arbeitsalltag, mit Druck- und Kopierstationen,
offenen Teeküchen und Kurzzeitarbeitszonen. Von außen am
augenfälligsten ist das dritte Kernelement des Entwurfs:
die Fassade. Wie ein schimmerndes Netz sind der Glasfassade teilweise schwarze Photovoltaikscheiben sowie weiß
bedruckte „Klimascheiben“ vorgesetzt. Letztere reduzieren
den Energieeintrag ins Gebäude und sorgen für angenehme
Lichtstimmungen, während die Photovoltaikscheiben zur
Stromerzeugung beitragen. Mit diesem Dreiklang aus grüner
Umgebung, klarer Organisation und innovativer Fassade
bildet das B.O.C. ein eigenständiges, intelligentes Bürogebäude für den Zukunftsstandort Golzheim.

A modern module in the further development of a complete site:
in the northern Düsseldorf district of Golzheim, RKW realised the
Bonneshof Office Center (B. O.C.), an extension to the 2007 T.O.C.
office building. It is RKW’s ninth building project in the immediate
neighbourhood. Designed for the user KPMG, the B.O.C. is based
on an end block with four parallel wings extending at right angles
from it that not only enmeshes with the neighbouring buildings,
but also manages to offer many views out and connections with
the outside world.
Internally the building is clearly laid out and defined by strong
movement axes, such as the grand central corridor on the ground
floor. A bistro and a series of conference rooms with a park view
are located behind the reception. The corridors in the upper floors,
on the other hand, are main movement routes used for everyday
activities, with printing and photocopying points, open kitchenettes
and part-time working zones. From outside, the most eye-catching
feature is the third core element of the design: the facade. Some

photovoltaic panels contribute to electricity generation. With this
triad of green environmental measures, clear organisation and
an innovative facade, the B. O.C. is an independent, intelligent office
building for the upwardly mobile district of Golzheim.
Kernkompetenzen zurückholen: Gegenüber der von RK W
in diesem Jahr fertiggestellten Halle 90 B soll das neue
V W Design-Zentrum entstehen, das bislang ausgelagerte
Design-Kapazitäten wieder eingliedert und überdies einen
losgelösten Gremienpräsentationsbereich beinhaltet. Aufgrund der Geheimhaltung zeigt sich der 90 mal 110 Meter
große Komplex nach außen hin als fast hermetisch geschlossene Skulptur. Diese skulpturale Wirkung wird durch
den eingezogenen Sockel des Erdgeschosses und ein die
gesamte Gebäudehöhe umhüllendes Band aus vertikal
angeordneten Metallbändern erzielt. Die Belichtung erfolgt
im Wesentlichen über zwei große, mittig eingeschnittene
Höfe, um die auf zwei Etagen die Ateliers und Büroflächen
der Designstudios angeordnet sind. Im 3. OG befindet sich
der Gremienbereich mit dem sogenannten PSK-Raum
und zwei angrenzenden Indoor-Präsentationshallen sowie
einer 90 mal 25 Meter großen Außenfläche. Hier werden
sämtliche Modellentscheidungen aller Konzernmarken
getroffen. Ein Vorentwurf wurde dem Bauherrn im Oktober
übergeben.

Calling upon core competences: intended to bring together the
previously outsourced design capacity and house a separate
committee presentation area, the new VW Design Center is to be
built opposite Hall 90 B, which was completed by RKW earlier
this year. Because of the need for secrecy, the 90 × 110 metre complex looks from the outside like an almost hermetically sealed
sculpture. This sculptural effect is created by the recessed ground
floor plinth and a completely enveloping band of vertical metal
strips. Light comes mainly from two large centrally positioned courtyard incisions, around which the workshops and offices of the designer studios are arranged on two floors. On the 3rd floor is the
committee area with the product strategy committee (PSK) room,
two adjacent indoor presentation halls and a 90 × 25 metre outdoor
area. This is where every important decision about the models of
all the corporate brands are made. A preliminary design for the VW
Design Center was handed to the client in October.

Platzsituation, die sich zum Landwehrkanal und der Straße
des 17. Juni hin öffnet – hier ist ein Haus mit Persönlichkeit
gefragt. Als monolithische Struktur geplant, setzt es mit einem
Staffelgeschoss die Dimensionen des Nachbargebäudes
fort. Für einen prägnanten Kopfteil sorgt ein skulpturaler Einschnitt, der die Überhöhung unterstreicht. Am Fuß des
Gebäudes ist der Eingang an der Platzseite und der Straßenseite erreichbar und reagiert so auf die besondere stadträumliche Situation. Eine großzügige Erscheinung bewirkt
auch die helle Natursteinfassade, in die bodentiefe rahmenlose Glasfenster im Wechsel mit alternierenden Metallpaneelen verbaut sind.

die Anlegestelle der Primus-Linie. Ihr bisheriger Ticketverkaufsschalter stand ungünstig vor der historischen Treppenanlage und harmonierte nicht mit der Umgebung. Daher
wurde das neue Gebäude auch neu positioniert und ermöglicht jetzt direkten Zugang zum Anleger. Als reduzierter Baukörper mit einem weit auskragenden Vordach vermittelt es
Eleganz und Großzügigkeit. Seine Oberflächen sind bewusst
auf nur zwei Materialien reduziert: Schwarzer, brünierter
Stahl in Anlehnung an den Schiffbau und helle Betonflächen
mit einer sägerauen Struktur. Die Betonflächen gehen von
der Unterseite des Vordaches in die Wandfläche am Schalterfenster über und setzen sich im Boden als Platz fort, der
mit einem eingelassenen Stahlprofil abgegrenzt wird. Der
Tresen springt als schwarzer Block aus der Betonfläche hervor und dient mit einem beleuchteten Logo als Eyecatcher.

Die „Maria Sibylla Merian“ ist ein Fahrgastschiff der Frankfurter Primus-Linie, das für Ausflugsfahrten und Events
genutzt wird. Ein neuer, hochwertiger Innenausbau sollte
über die übliche Ausstattung von Ausflugsschiffen hinausgehen. Gleichzeitig war hohe Flexibilität gefragt, da das
Schiff auch am regulären Tourbetrieb teilnehmen soll. Dafür
sorgt ein Innenraumkonzept mit beweglichem Mobiliar, abtrennbaren Bereichen und einem intelligenten Beleuchtungskonzept. Gerade hierbei galt es, immer auch die Außenwirkung zu beachten. So ist es bei Nachtfahrten wichtig, dass
die Passagiere die Aussicht genießen können, gleichzeitig

Mehr als nur ein Einrichtungshaus: In diesem Frühjahr hat
das erste deutsche IKEA Shoppingcenter in Lübeck eröffnet.
Hier ist der IKEA Store integriert in die Mall eines größeren
Shoppingcenters. Dieses Konzept hat IKEA bereits in anderen
europäischen Ländern umgesetzt, in Deutschland gibt es
bislang zehn so genannte Homeparks mit ergänzendem
Einzelhandel in kleinerem Stil. Das Unternehmen will damit
Synergieeffekte erzielen und seinen eigenen Standort
stärken. Als im Nordosten von Lübeck ein ehemaliges großes
Firmengelände von Villeroy & Boch frei wurde, konnte
RKW für den schwedischen Konzern ein solches Zentrum
planen und realisieren.
In seiner Organisation ist das Center nach dem klassischen
„Knochenprinzip“ aufgebaut: Eine Mall verbindet zwei starke
Endpunkte. So bildet IKEA den einen Magneten, während
am anderen Ende der leicht geschwungenen Mall ein großer
Edeka-Markt sowie ein Saturn-Elektromarkt angesiedelt
sind. Neben den Haupteingängen an den Enden gibt es auch
einen kleineren Eingang in der Mitte der Mall. Alle Eingänge
sind von großen Ellipsen gekennzeichnet, die eine beeindruckende Raumhöhe von elf Metern aufweisen. Auch die
Mall ist mit sieben Metern Höhe ungewöhnlich großzügig
dimensioniert. Grundsätzlich ist die Mall eingeschossig, einzelne zweigeschossige Teile werden nur im Inneren erschlossen. Das Ergebnis ähnelt stark einer Ladenstraße, die
durch die geschwungene Form der Mall für Spannung sorgt.
Insgesamt sind hier 54 Shops und Dienstleister angesiedelt.
More than just a home furnishings store: the first German IKEA
shopping centre opened this spring in Lübeck. The IKEA store is
integrated into the mall of a larger shopping centre. While IKEA
has already realised this concept in other European countries, in
Germany to date there are ten smaller-scale "Home Parks" with
additional retailers. The company wishes to create synergy effects
and strengthen its position. When a large site in the north-east
of Lübeck formerly belonging to Villeroy & Boch became free, RKW
designed and realised one of these centres for the Swedish company.
The new centre is organised according to the classic dumbbell
principle: a mall connects two highly attractive shopping venues.
In this case, IKEA is one of these magnets and at the other end
of the dumbbell is a large Edeka supermarket and a Saturn consumer electronics store. In addition to the main entrances at the
ends, there is also a smaller entrance in the middle of the mall. All
entrances are marked by large ellipses, which have an impressive

In seiner Gesamtheit erzeugt das Center den Eindruck
von spielerischer Leichtigkeit.

The basic aesthetic theme, which starts with the large ellipses, is
the closeness of the sea. Isolated boulders, pebbles and driftwood
on a beach – those are the associations evoked by a high-pressure
laminate (HPL) facade with a timber surface texture, round cut-outs
in the roof to admit light and circular shapes in the floor coverings.
Closeness to nature also expresses itself in the views out from the
food court on the 1st floor – from where diners can look onto the
Trave and the nature reserve beyond. As a whole, the centre creates
an impression of playful lightness.

shopping centre in the Hagen inner city. After dismissing the design

Handelsgeschosse als Mall mit rund 70 Geschäften, organisiert um eine zentrale Ellipse. Auch erwähnenswert ist die
angestrebte DGNB-Zertifizierung in Gold – im Handelssegment noch selten. Dafür wurde unter der Galerie das derzeit zweitgrößte Geothermiefeld Deutschlands installiert.

The renewal of an urban institution: in the 1950s, RKW founder
Helmut Rhode worked on the Kaufhof building on Berliner Allee,
which was originally built for the Horten store chain. With the passage of time, it became necessary to develop a forward-looking

Ein einzigartiges Technikbauwerk soll bei Rottweil im
Schwarzwald entstehen: Die Aufzugsparte des ThyssenKrupp-Konzerns plant einen Testturm, in dem Fahrstühle
getestet, aber auch unter realistischen Bedingungen den
Kunden vorgeführt werden können. Am Neckartal stehend,
wird der 250-Meter-Turm – höher als der Kölner Dom –
dann die kleine Gemeinde überragen, deren höchster Punkt
bislang das Rathaus war. So war es ein Hauptaugenmerk
des RKW-Entwurfs, mit der Beziehung dieses Turms zu Ort
und Landschaft umzugehen. Er zeichnet sich durch seine
besondere Schlankheit aus, die durch einen zweigeteilten
Schaft und transparente vertikale Fugen noch signifikant
verstärkt wird. So wird die Baumasse aufgelöst, die Assoziation mit Grashalmen oder sich wiegendem Korn liegt nahe.
Ein Ortsbezug wird außerdem durch die Erker in den Köpfen
des Turmes hergestellt, die sich an die traditionellen Häuser
der Region anlehnen. Darüber befindet sich eine öffentlich
zugängliche Aussichtplattform mit einem spektakulären Ausblick. Die Jury zeichnete den Entwurf von RKW mit dem

A unique engineering structure is planned for Rottweil in the
Black Forest: the elevator department at the ThyssenKrupp Group
is planning to build a test tower to test and demonstrate elevators
under realistic conditions. Standing 250 metres high – higher than
Cologne Cathedral – in the Neckar valley, the tower will rise way
above the tiny settlement. Hence a main feature of the design was
the relationship of this tower to the locality and the landscape.
The tower is remarkable in particular for its slenderness, which
is enhanced even more by the two-part shaft and transparent
vertical joint. The mass of the structure is resolved with a glancing
reference made to grass stalks. A link to the locality is provided
through the oriel in the head of the tower, a glazed area designed
to draw upon the character of the traditional houses in the region.
Above this is a public viewing platform. The jury honoured this design
with the 2nd prize.

Überbetriebliche Berufsbildungsstätte für die
Kreishandwerkerschaft. Mönchengladbach
Acht Disziplinen unter einem Dach: Zur beruflichen Ausbildung im Handwerk gehört der Fachunterricht in einer
überbetrieblichen Ausbildungswerkstatt. Um die fundierte
und zeitgemäße Unterweisung von Schlossern, Tischlern,
Mechatronikern, Installateuren, aber auch Kfz-Mechanikern,
Maler- und Lackierern bis zu Friseuren oder Bürokaufleuten für die Zukunft sicherzustellen, entstand für die Kreishandwerkerschaft Mönchengladbach ein modernes Gebäude mit übergeordnetem Verwaltungsbereich.
Aufgabe von RKW war es, alle Nutzungen spezifisch zu behandeln, gleichzeitig aber ein vereinendes Gebäude zu
entwickeln, das für das Handwerk eine feste Adresse bildet.
Das Ergebnis: Nicht ein großer Komplex, sondern vier Einzelbaukörper, die sich um ein gemeinsames Atrium gruppieren.
Dieses Atrium ist das soziale Zentrum des Neubaus, ein
lichter Raum mit Sitzgelegenheiten für Pausen und Kommunikation. Von hier aus werden die Werkstätten und die
oberen Geschosse erschlossen. Teilweise bieten runde Fenster spannende Einblicke in die einzelnen Arbeitsbereiche.
Und für besondere Aufenthaltsqualität sorgt eine Dachterrasse in einer lebendig bewegten, teils begrünten Dachlandschaft.
Eine wichtige Rolle spielen die Materialien für Fassaden und
Innenräume, die sich auf das Handwerk und auf die in der
Lehre vermittelten Werkstoffgruppen wie Metalle, Holz und
Farbe beziehen. Robust und nachhaltig, bilden sie einen
dichten atmosphärischen Dreiklang mit hellem und freundlichem Charakter – und tragen so zu einer konstruktiven
Lernumgebung bei.

Eight disciplines under one roof: the training of tradesmen is best
delivered in a multi-craft educational workshop. A modern building
with administration offices was realised for the Mönchengladbach
District Craftsmen’s Association to provide technically sound and
up-to-date vocational education to future locksmiths, carpenters,
mechatronics technicians, plumbers and fitters, vehicle mechanics,
painters and varnishers, hairdressers and business administration workers.
RKW’s task was to consider the separate needs of each use but
to design a building which could be used in common by all the trades
and serve as their recognised centre. The result: not a large complex but four individual blocks grouped around a shared atrium.
This atrium is the social centre of the new development, a light space
with seating for breaks and communication. The workshops and
upper storeys are accessed from here. In some parts, round windows offer stimulating views into the different work areas. A roof
terrace offers the perfect opportunity to spend spare time amid the
refreshing natural surroundings of a partially planted roof landscape.
The materials used in the interior and the facades, such as metals,
wood and paint, play an important role, having been chosen for
their relevance to the apprentices’ studies. Robust and durable, they
form a close atmospheric triad with a light and friendly character –
and contribute to a constructive learning environment.

Das Areal eines leerstehenden Bürogebäudes in der Mönchenwerther Straße liegt ideal in Düsseldorf Oberkassel
und bietet beste Aussicht in den Park oberhalb des Feldmühleplatzes. Die Aufgabe für RKW: Errichten eines hochwertigen Gebäudes des klassischen Wohnungsbaus, das
diese Lage ebenso optimal ausnutzt wie das sehr tiefe Grundstück. So entstand ein mit bis zu 24 Metern ungewöhnlich
tiefes Wohngebäude mit ausgedehnten Loggien zur sonnigen
Straßenseite. Seine symmetrische Fassade mit zweigeschossigem Natursteinsockel vermittelt Großzügigkeit, sein
Innenraum überzeugt durch hochwertige Materialien und
Beleuchtung. Die Wohnungen sind mit einer großzügigen

The site of an empty office building in Mönchenwerther Strasse
occupies an ideal position in Oberkassel, Düsseldorf and has
excellent views into the park over Feldmühleplatz. The task for
RKW: to create a high-quality building of traditional housing
construction that would make the best use of a very deep plot.
And the result was an extraordinarily deep building, up to 24
metres from front to back, with long loggias on the sunny street
side. Its symmetrical facade with a two-storey natural stone
plinth allows spaciousness and an interior that impresses through
its high-quality materials and lighting. The apartments are arranged with a spacious central axis extending from the front to the
back of the building: a kitchen, dining room and living area come off
a central vestibule and are connected by a series of double doors –
with an extensive view over the beautiful park.

in Leimen. Als Wettbewerbsbeitrag entstand ein Ensemble
aus drei Gebäuden, die sich wie die ortstypischen, terrassenartigen Obstgärten in die Topographie einfügen. Das
Lagergebäude liegt sogar fast komplett unterirdisch. Direkt
an der Straße befindet sich hingegen das repräsentative
Verwaltungsgebäude auf einem Sockel aus Bruchsteinen.
Sein Hauptkörper zeigt filigranen Beton, dünne Bauteile

Der Deutsche Biennale-Pavillon in Venedig ist ein Bauwerk
mit einer bewegten Geschichte: Errichtet in bayrisch-klassizistischem Stil anno 1909, wurde er unter anderem im Nationalsozialismus signifikant umgebaut. Heute ist er zu einer Art

Der Entwurf stellt die Historie des Gebäudes nicht in Frage –
der Bestand wird lediglich erweitert, neu orientiert und
transformiert. So bleibt die monumentale Fassade auf der
Landseite ebenso bestehen, wie die fast sakralen Ausstellungsräume. Die Errungenschaften der historischen Moderne werden reflektiert, gleichzeitig ist die Formensprache
der Zweiten Moderne verpflichtet. Auch greift der Entwurf
klassizistische Stilideen auf, führt die vorgefundene Großzügigkeit fort und aktualisiert das repräsentative Element. Grundlegend neu ist eine architektonische Janusköpfigkeit: Der
Pavillon erhält ein zweites, ebenbürtiges Gesicht auf der bisherigen Rückseite, hin zur Lagune. Davor weitet sich eine
Terrassenanlage, von der eine Freitreppe hinunter zu einer
Empfangshalle am Wasser führt. Dadurch erhält das

gesamte Gelände erstmals eine Fassade zur Wasserseite –
der Pavillon als erster Palazzo am Canale Grande.

The German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale is a structure with
a turbulent history: erected in Bavarian classicist style in 1909, it
was significantly altered during the period of German National
Socialism. Today it has become an art gallery, opening on a regular basis to the world’s public. To reinterpret this highly charged
building was the task set by the Deutscher Werkbund (German
Association of Craftsmen) for 22 selected architects – and to examine its present relevance to today’s modern architecture. The
reponses to the exhibition “This is modern” were summarised at
the 14th Biennale of Architecture, which took place from July
to August 2014 in Venice, and were also on display in November
on RKW’s initiative in Düsseldorf.
The design does not question the history of the building – the
existing is only extended, reoriented and transformed. The monumental facade on the landward side is left unchanged, as are the
almost sacred exhibition rooms. The achievements of the historic
modern are reflected, while the language of form of the second modern is fully engaged. The design also draws from ideas of classical
style, continues the existing grand scale and updates the representative element. The architectural two-faced Janus head is new:
the Pavilion gains a second face, equal in status to the first, on
the former rear side facing the lagoon. A terrace in front of this second face widens and a set of steps leads down from there to a
reception hall at the water’s edge. The whole site now, for the first
time, has a facade on the side facing the water – the pavilion becomes the first Palazzo on the Grand Canal.

Die Altstadt der niederrheinischen Stadt Kempen ist durch
historische Giebelfassaden und enge Gassen geprägt. An
der Ecke Burg- und Orsaystraße errichtete RKW ein innerstädtisches Wohn- und Geschäftshaus, das sich sensibel
an die Örtlichkeit anpasst. Als Ergebnis einer städtebaulichen
Untersuchung entstand ein Gebäudeensemble, das genau
dem alten Wegesystem der Stadt mit seinen verschobenen,
gegeneinander versetzten Gassen entspricht. Diese Wege
wurden aufgenommen und von vier Häusern auf einem gemeinsamen Sockel ergänzt. Das Sockelgeschoss, abgesetzt
durch eine klassische Natursteinfassade, bietet kleinteiligem
Einzelhandel Platz. Im Obergeschoss gruppieren sich hochwertige Wohnungen um ein nach Süden orientiertes Plateau,
das einen gut belichteten „Stadtgarten“ mit einem Wandelgang entstehen lässt. Das ausgewogene Gebäude für die

Historic gable facades and narrow streets define the old town area
in Kempen. On the corner of Burg- and Orsaystrasse, RKW have
realised an inner-urban residential and retail building with great
sensitivity to the locality. Resulting from an urban design study,
an ensemble of buildings has been built that is in total accord with
the town’s disjointed old network of crooked narrow streets and
passageways. These thoroughfares were incorporated and improved in the design of the four buildings sharing a common ground
floor storey. This storey, distinguishable by its traditional natural
stone facade, offers space for small retail premises. High-quality
apartments on the first floor are grouped around a south-facing
raised square which provides a well-lit town garden to walk through.
The building, designed in close compliance with planning policy,
is in harmony with its Kempen old town surroundings.
Lebensqualität auf vielen Ebenen: In einer ruhigen Wohnstraße in Düsseldorf Oberkassel hat RKW ein Wohnhaus
für private Bauherren errichtet. Wunsch der Bauherren war
die räumliche Aufteilung der verschiedenen Nutzungen
auf die fünf einzelnen Etagen. So entstand ein Gebäude, das
in seiner Organisation an historische Stadtpalais erinnert.
Im Erdgeschoss betreten die Gäste ein Entree, das in eine
großzügige Wohnküche mit einer dahinterliegenden Nebenküche führt – die Küche wird zum ersten, geselligen und
repräsentativen Anlaufpunkt. Erst im 1. OG liegt der Wohnbereich mit Bibliothek, in den die Gäste später gebeten werden
können. Dem Anspruch an das Gebäude angemessen, befinden sich neben dem formell gestalteten Eingang auch
zwei Stellplätze unmittelbar im Gebäude. Gartenseitig führt
eine Treppe von der Terrasse in den Garten – als letzte, ebenso attraktiv gestaltete Nutzungsebene.

Living quality on many levels: in a quiet residential street in Oberkassel, Düsseldorf, RKW realised a house for private clients. The
clients requested a spatial division of the various uses on the five
individual floors. The resulting building is reminiscent of earlier
town houses in its organisation. On the ground floor, the guests step
into an entrance hall leading to a spacious living kitchen with a
utility room behind – the kitchen is the initial, gregarious and tonesetting point of departure for the rest of the building. The living
areas are on the 1st floor along with a library, into which guests can
be later invited. Appropriately for the status of the property, two
parking places are incorporated directly into the building near the
formally designed entrance. On the garden side, a set of steps
leads from the terrace into the garden – a final and equally attractive utility area.

Auf der Schanzenstraße in Düsseldorf Oberkassel lag eines
der letzten großen Grundstücke des Stadtviertels. Hier
entstand ein hochwertiges Stadtpalais im klassischen Stil,
das rückwärtig an den zukünftigen Belsenpark grenzt.
Auf diese vorteilhafte Lage galt es, angemessen zu reagieren. So verfügt das Gebäude nicht über eine Vorder- und
Rückseite im eigentlichen Sinne, sondern vielmehr zwei
Hauptfassaden. Zur Parkseite wie auch zur Straße wirkt die
durch Gesimsbänder stark gegliederte Fassade gleichermaßen repräsentativ. Ebenfalls zu beiden Seiten hat jede
Wohnung außergewöhnlich große Loggien mit eigenen
Raumqualitäten. Erschlossen wird das Haus über ein ausgedehntes Foyer mit Hotelcharakter. Ein Concierge begrüßt
hier Bewohner und Gäste, die dann über zwei Aufzüge die
18 Wohnungen erreichen. Ihre Grundrisse entsprechen dem
Ideal großbürgerlichen Wohnens – mit jedem denkbaren
Komfort.

Pablo-Neruda-Grundschule mit Einfeldsporthalle.

Am zentralen Husemannplatz in der Bochumer Innenstadt
wird der sogenannte Justizblock abgerissen. Hier soll das
Viktoriaquartier entstehen, eine Kombination verschiedener
urbaner Nutzungen mit einem Schwerpunkt auf Einzelhandel.
Das entsprechende Vergabeverfahren hat RKW gemeinsam
mit dem Investor HBB gewonnen. Der Siegerentwurf sieht
ein Einkaufsquartier mit einer stadträumlichen Durchwegung
vor, die zwar von einem Glasdach überspannt wird, aber
dennoch einen starken Straßencharakter hat. „Stadt und Einkaufszentrum miteinander versöhnen“ ist das Motto des
Entwurfs. Dafür wird auch eine Galerie im 1. OG, die mit
Brücken die einzelnen Gebäude verbindet, in die Fassaden
eingelassen – so bleibt der Eindruck einer Gasse erhalten.

On Schanzenstrasse in Düsseldorf Oberkassel is one of the last

entstanden. Dieser umfasst die neu gebaute Pablo-NerudaGrundschule, eine neue Dreifachsporthalle sowie das
sanierte Reclam-Gymnasium. RKW hatte im Wettbewerb den

inmitten der Rohbauarbeiten beauftragt, die Dreifeldsporthalle
und die Grundschule kurzfristig zu übernehmen. Letztere
gliedert sich in zwei versetzt übereinander liegende Baukörper, die ein schwebendes Quadrat bilden. Es gliedert
den Pausenhof und schafft eine regengeschützte Freifläche.
Im Erdgeschoss sind der Hort, die Fachkabinette und der
Speiseraum angeordnet, während darüber die Klassenräume
liegen. Eine Einfeldsporthalle mit ihren Nebenräumen ist im
Untergeschoss platziert. Der Neubau im Passivhausstandard
konnte dank des flexiblen und kompetenten Einsatzes termingerecht eröffnet werden.

in the middle of the planning process and with building carcass
works under way, to take over responsibility for the triple sports
hall and the primary school. The primary school consists of two
offset, partially raised components arranged on plan in a square.
Dividing the playground, the building provides an open space
sheltered from the rain. The ground floor has the children’s day-

the other classrooms on the floor above. A smaller, general sports
hall with its ancillary rooms is in the basement. RKW’s flexibility
ordinarily large loggias with their own spatial qualities. Entry to
the building is through an extended foyer with a hotel-like character.
A concierge welcomes residents and guests, who reach the 18
apartments by two lifts. The floor layout is ideal for an upper class
lifestyle – with every conceivable comfort.
The Justice Block was demolished on the central Husemannplatz
in an inner-city location in Bochum. Soon to be built here, the
Viktoriaquartier provides for a combination of different urban uses
with a focus on retail. RKW and the investor HBB won the award
process for the project. The winning design proposes a retail quar­­­­­­­ter with an urban thoroughfare that keeps its strong street character although covered by a glass roof. “City and retail centre
reconciled” is the motto of the design. Therefore it incorporates
a gallery on the 1st floor connected to the individual buildings
by bridges built into the facade – thus retaining the impression
of a narrow street.
A design competition was held for the redesign of an inner-city
and expertise contributed to the opening on schedule of the new
school campus in Leipzig under the contract procedures for
build to Passivhaus standards.

Schule Steinkaul, Sanierung und Erweiterung.

Vom Dorf zum boomenden Stadtteil: Düsseldorf Himmelgeist, im Süden der Landeshauptstadt gelegen, erlebt derzeit einen starken Zuzug. Dank großem Neubaugebiet ist
der Standort direkt am Rhein vor allem für junge Familien
mit kleinen Kindern attraktiv geworden. Kurzfristig mussten
folglich Grundschulplätze geschaffen werden. Die im benachbarten Holthausen gelegene Schule hatte ihre Kapazitätsgrenze erreicht, und die Schule an der Alt-Himmelgeister
Hauptstraße Steinkaul verfügte lediglich über drei Klassenräume. So sollte RKW das denkmalgeschützte Gebäude
sanieren und zusätzliche Flächen auch für die Einrichtung
eines Ganztagsangebots schaffen.
Dafür entwickelte RKW auf einem kleinen Grundstück einen
modernen, kubischen Anbau, der mittels einer Glasfuge
an das Bestandsgebäude angeschlossen ist. Der Altbau mit
einem Satteldach wurde in enger Abstimmung mit dem
Denkmalamt saniert, die Fassade mit ihren abgesetzten Ornamenten in einem hellen Beigeton gestrichen. Als Kontrast
wurde der Neubau aus – gerade für die Kinder – haptisch
erlebbaren Ziegeln errichtet, die aber in der gleichen Farbwelt gehalten sind wie das alte Gebäude und so einen harmonischen Gesamteindruck erzielen. Auch die Innenräume
sind hell und freundlich, dabei aber maximal zurückhaltend
gestaltet, um möglichst viel Ruhe in das Gebäude zu bringen. Dank dieser Erweiterung ist die Schule nun zweizügig
und verfügt über sieben Räume für Klassen und zwei weitere
für das OGS-Angebot. Dabei ist der Erweiterungsbau direkt
für weiteres Wachstum angelegt, etwa durch die Orientierung
der Flure und die Einrichtung von Sollbruchstellen in den
entsprechenden Wänden. Denn der Trend nach Himmelgeist
hält an.

Eine neue Adresse an der neuen Schadowstraße: Düsseldorfs Einkaufsmeile erhält mit dem U-Bahn-Bau der Wehrhahnlinie und dem angrenzenden Kö-Bogen eine immense
Aufwertung. Dazu passt ein neues Geschäftshaus, das von
RKW an der Ecke Bleichstraße /Schadowstraße geplant und
umgesetzt wurde. Die mehrgeschossige Handelsimmobilie
wird von der Textilkette Primark genutzt, die von der hohen
Sichtbarkeit des Gebäudes im Straßenbild der Schadowstraße profitiert. Zurückspringende Fugen gliedern die Fassade horizontal und lassen zweigeschossige Bänder entstehen. Im zweiten und dritten Stockwerk wird in einem weiten
Schwung, dem Straßenverlauf der Bleichstraße folgend,
ein Erker ausgebildet, der die Ecke der beiden Straßen prägt
und sie wie selbstverständlich verbindet, während auf
Straßenniveau zweigeschossige Schaufenster die Möglichkeit bieten, die Angebote zu inszenieren. An einer idealen
Handelsadresse ist so ein neues Textilhaus für Düsseldorf
entstanden.
Für das Unternehmen Airbus Group /Airbus Defence & Space
entstand eine Flugzeughalle für 20 Tornado-Jets, um eine
Vielzahl bestimmter Wartungsabläufe zu vereinen. Eine hoch
komplexe Entwurfsaufgabe, für die RKW das Werkzeug der
Moderation nutzte, um alle späteren Nutzer an einen Tisch
zu holen. So wurden vor Planungsbeginn in Workshops
die Anforderungen an die Halle klar und präzise formuliert.
Das Resultat ist ein maßgeschneidertes Gebäude, das die
Jet-Plätze mit Büros und Werkstätten verbindet. Dabei bildet
der Büro- und Werkstattbereich das Rückgrat des Baus und
bietet direkte Zugänge und gelenkte Einblicke. Für einen reibungslosen Betrieb der einzelnen Wartungsstationen musste
ein komplett stützenfreies Bauwerk hergestellt werden. Dank
eines Tonnendachs mit einem hochkomplizierten, dreidimensionalen Stahltragwerk entstand eine Halle mit den enormen
Abmessungen von 220 mal 67 Metern. Auf einer Gebäudeseite tragen sechs Verbundstützen von jeweils nur 50 mal 50
Zentimetern die Last des Daches. Durch den Einsatz dieser

wurde auch auf zertifizierte Nachhaltigkeit gelegt – erstmals
konnte mit dem Einsatz von RKW-Architekten für ein
Handelsobjekt ein DGNB-Zertifikat in Gold erreicht werden.

An aircraft hangar to simplify maintenance work on 20 Tornado
jets was built for Airbus Group /Airbus Defence & Space. A highly
complex design task, for which RKW used the tool of moderation
to get all the later users around one table. The requirements for the
hangar were clearly and precisely formulated in workshops before
the design began. The result is a tailor-made building that combines
jet stands with offices and workshops. The offices and workshop
area forms the spine of the building and provides direct access and
controlled views into the hangar. The structure had to be completely free of intermediate supports so that work could be performed
efficiently at the individual maintenance stands. Thanks to the
barrel roof with its highly complex steel structure, the hall has the
enormous dimensions of 220 × 67 metres. On one side of the building, the weight of the roof is carried by six 50 × 50 cm composite
columns. These slender supports allow enough room for 42 metre
wide doors. The hangar was completed in February 2014.

Der in den 90er-Jahren von RKW geplante UFA-Palast
Düsseldorf war das erste Multiplex-Kino der Stadt und bietet
fast 3.000 Plätze. Bis ins Jahr 2001 wurden in einem speziellen Saal auch Filme im Überformat IMAX vorgeführt.
Nachdem sich die Technik – auch aufgrund zu geringen
Filmangebots – nicht durchsetzte, stand der Saal mit seiner
besonderen IMAX-Architektur mit übergroßer Leinwand
und steiler Aufsattelung mehr als ein Jahrzehnt leer. Hier ist

Das Golf- und Wellnesshotel Öschberghof in Donaueschingen
ist weithin bekannt und gut ausgelastet. Eine Erweiterung
und Umorganisation für weiteres Wachstum war Thema eines
Wettbewerbs. Der RKW-Entwurf fügt dem Haus einen neuen
Gebäudeteil hinzu, der aus der Gesamtanlage erst eine echte
U-förmige Hofstruktur entstehen lässt. Als zweiter Hauptaspekt des Entwurfs wird der Haupteingang auf die Nordseite
verlegt, und sorgt so für ein markantes Entree. Weitere Qualitäten des Hauses werden verstärkt, etwa die Lage in den
makellosen Greens des Golfplatzes. So werden alle Zimmer
des neuen Bettentrakts mit Grünblick ausgerichtet. Auch
spielt der Entwurf mit der Topographie, indem etwa ein geschützter Gang zur Golfakademie teilweise in die Landschaft
eingelassen wird. Weitere Aspekte beinhalten einen vergrößerten Wellness-Bereich, vielfältigere Gastronomie und
eine intelligente Erschließung für Gäste und Mitarbeiter.

The golf and wellness hotel Öschberghof in Donaueschingen is
widely known and has a good occupancy rate. An extension and
reorganisation to permit further growth was the subject of a competition. The RKW design adds a new part to the building, which
gives the overall layout a true U-shaped courtyard structure. As
a second key aspect of the design, the main entrance is moved
to the north side and provides a striking entrée. Other qualities of
the building are also improved, such as its outlook with respect
to the golf course’s immaculate greens, with all the rooms on the
new bedroom wing designed to have a view of the course. The
design also plays with the topography by incorporating some of
a sheltered path to the golf academy into the landscape. Further
improvements include an extended wellness area, many dining
options and well-designed movement routes for guests and
Designed by RKW in the 1990s, the UFA Palace Düsseldorf was the
city’s first multiplex cinema and had seats for almost 3,000.
Until 2001, it had a special auditorium where people could watch
large-format IMAX films. After the technology failed to become established – not helped by the inadequate range of films – the room,
with its special architecture including an over-sized projection
screen and steep row incline, stood empty for more than a decade.
A luxury cinema is to be built in its place, with a different room
geometry and more gentle inclining rows. A greater distance between the rows of seats offers more leg room and there is also
more space between adjacent seats. The visual highlights are the
two chandeliers that are raised up high before the performance.
A red curtain opens as the film begins – and brings traditional
cinema culture to life.
