Geschieden, Geköpft, Gestorben, Geschieden, Geköpft, Überlebt... England im 16. Jahrhundert: Der junge König Henry VIII. (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) regiert das Land. Er ist attraktiv, arrogant und machtbesessen - sein Leben ist geprägt von zahlreichen Liebschaften, außerehelichen Kindern und ausschweifenden Festen. Sein sehnlichster Wunsch ist ein Thronfolger, doch Königin Katharina konnte ihm bisher noch keinen Sohn schenken. Weil sich der Papst weigert, einer Scheidung zuzustimmen, geht Henry bis zum Äußersten ... Hintergrund Henry VIII. war von 1509 bis zu seinem Tod im Jahre 1547 König von England und ist bis heute der unbeliebteste König in der englischen Geschichte. Der machtbesessene Zweitgeborene von Heinrich VII. und Elisabeth von York sollte eigentlich Geistlicher werden, doch nach dem überraschenden Tod seines Bruders wurde er zum Prince of Wales und damit offizieller Thronfolger. Aufgrund des letzten Willens seines Vaters, der 1509 verstarb, heiratete er Katharina von Aragon, die beim Volk sehr beliebt war. Ihre ersten vier Schwangerschaften endeten in Fehlgeburten oder sie gebar Kinder, deren Lebensdauer auf ein paar Wochen beschränkt war. © Sony Pictures Erst 1516 kam Tochter und Thronfolgerin Mary zu Welt. Da sich kein männlicher Nachkomme einstellte, war Henry davon überzeugt, dass seine Ehe verflucht sei. Er wollte sich von Katharina scheiden lassen, konnte das aber vorerst nicht durchsetzen. Daraufhin hatte er mehrere Mätressen, darunter Elizabeth Blount, Mary Boleyn und später deren Schwester Anne Boleyn, die er trotz der bestehenden Ehe mit Katharina heimlich heiratete. Als diese Heirat öffentlich und für gültig erklärt wurde, überwarf sich Henry mit dem Papst, was zur Trennung der Englischen Kirche von Rom, sowie zur Annullierung der Ehe mit Katharina führte. Das hatte zur Folge, dass Henrys erste Tochter Mary als Thronfolgerin für ungültig erklärt wurde und Annes Erstgeborene zur späteren Königin Elisabeth I. gekrönt wurde. Als Henry sich bewusst wurde, dass auch Anne ihm nach etwaigen Fehlgeburten keinen Sohn schenken würde, verlor er das Interesse. Dies führte so weit, dass sie unter einem Vorwand angeklagt und daraufhin durch Enthauptung hingerichtet wurde. Es folgten weitere vier Frauen in Henrys Leben. Insgesamt wurden zwei seiner sechs Ehefrauen hingerichtet (Anne Boleyn und Catherine Howard).
