CONJUNCTIONS Coordinating Conjunctions: (does not affect word order) aber denn sondern und oder but because (for) but, on the contrary and or Subordinating Conjunctions: (does affect word order – kicks conj. verb to end) als bevor da when before because, since (casual) so that that before after if, whether damit daß ehe nachdem ob obgleich obwohl seit seitdem sobald während wann weil wenn although although since (temporal) since (temporal) as soon as while; whereas when (in question) because if, when, whenever NOTE: The choice of weil or da depends on how strong a casual connection the speaker wishes to convey. Special Examples weil If he/she considers the reasons for an action or an attitude absolutely compelling, he uses weil (not da): Ich esse, weil ich sehr hungrig bin. Ich arbeite, weil ich Geld verdienen muß. weil/ da If he/she considers the reasons good and adequate (but not absolutely compelling), he uses either weil or da: Ich ging heute schwimmen, weil es so schön war. Da es heute so schön war, ging ich schwimmen. da If the reason is – in his eyes at least – not all compelling or forcing, the speaker uses da (not weil): Da ich noch zehn Minuten hatte, trank ich noch eine Tasse Kaffee. Da ich sowieso nach München fahre, werde ich Tante Elvira besuchen.* als wenn wann (subordinating conjunction used in expressions of past time) (subordinating conjunction used in expressions of the future and for whenever and if) (question word and subordinating conjunction for unknown time) Ex. Ich weiss nicht, wann ich ankomme.
