German II Kapitel 7 Subjects, Direct Objects, and Indirect Objects: Word Order We previously learned about sentences with three nouns: a subject, a direct object, and an indirect object. Ich gebe meiner Mutter die Blumen. I give my mother the flowers. The order for these sentences was: subject Ich verb gebe indirect object meiner Mutter direct object die Blumen. This is the correct order for sentences with nouns as both the direct and indirect objects. However, if we replace these nouns with pronouns, the order of the direct and indirect objects switches. The new order is: subject Ich verb gebe direct object sie indirect object ihr. We do a similar switch in English: I give my mother flowers. I give them to my mother. Here are some more examples: Ich kaufe meinem Bruder das Fahrrad. Ich kaufe es ihm. Sie schenkt ihrer Schwester den Hund. Sie schenkt ihn ihr. If only one of the direct or indirect objects is a pronoun, always put the pronoun first. Wir geben ihm einen Hund. Ich kaufe es meinem Bruder. Sie gibt ihn ihrer Mutter. Er schenkt sie ein Auto.
