THE DIRECT OBJECT (the accusative case) Definitions The direct object is the noun or pronoun that is affected by the action of the verb and by the subject. The subject performs an action that controls, manipulates or does something to the direct object. Ich kaufe den Wein immer hier.* *I buy the wine always here. Accusative case The accusative case is the case used to indicate the direct object of the sentence. Most nouns indicate their case by the endings given to their accompanying article.
