II. Separable Prefix Verbs
These are verbs that have a prefix which is attached to the beginning of the
word in some instances, but which normally go the end. So far you’ve met:
 sieht fern – Günter sieht viel fern, aber Sabines Vater sieht nicht so
viel fern.
 ruft an – Meine Mutti ruft mich immer an.


lädt ein – Meine Großeltern laden mich für ein Familientreffen ein.
geht spazieren – Ich gehe mit meinem Hund jeden Tag spazieren.
When these verbs are used with modal verbs, such as wollen/will (want(s)),
the prefix is not separated and the entire verb goes to the end:
 Ich will nicht viel fernsehen. – I don’t want to watch much TV.
 Ich muss meine Mutti anrufen. – I have to call my mom.
 Sie will mich zur Fete einladen. – She wants to invite me to the party.
 Ich soll mehr spazierengehen. – I should go for walks more.
III. Kultur: Answering the telephone
 Answer landlines with your last name. Kids often answer with their
full names. This is done so the caller knows right away whom they’re
talking to.
 Auf Wiederhören = good bye on the telephone. (Until the re-hearing)
 Das Handy, -s – cell phone: With the proliferation of cell phone in
Germany, some phone etiquette is changing slightly. (Not as necessary
to answer with your name)
