ielleicht haben Sie auch schon neben ihm im Flugzeug gesessen. Neben diesem Mann, der immer auf dem Sprung
ist: von Wien nach Berlin, heute Stuttgart, morgen London, und
gleich wieder zurück nach Österreich. Unterwegs zur nächsten
Aufführung, dem nächsten Applaus entgegen.
Und sicher war er wieder in Eile, dieser 43-Jährige mit
den schmalen, blauen Augen und dem gewinnenden Lächeln.
Denn abends um halb acht muss er ja wieder auf der MusicalBühne stehen, die er beherrscht und ausfüllt, wie kaum ein
Deutscher vor ihm: als singendes Phantom, als tanzender Kardinal, dessen Robe im Bühnenlicht aufflammt; oder als rockender Pharao mit blonder Elvis-Tolle.
Die Rede ist von Uwe Kröger. Wenn das Musical einen
deutschen Star hervorgebracht hat, dann ist er es. Das Branchenblatt Musicals wählte ihn elfmal zum deutschsprachigen
Musicaldarsteller Nummer eins, fast alle großen Rollen hat er
gespielt. Den Inspektor Javert in „Les Misérables“, den Kardinal Richelieu in den „Drei Musketieren“, die Hauptrollen in „Napoleon“ und „Die Schöne und das Biest“.
Dann kam der große Tag. Wien, 3. September 1992. Kröger ist zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon ein renommierter Künstler,
der bereits in vielen Stücken zu sehen war. Aber an diesem
Abend ist vieles anders: Es ist die Uraufführung des Musicals
„Elisabeth“, das die Geschichte der Kaiserin Sissi erzählt. Kröger ist für die Rolle des Todes besetzt, der die schwermütige
Monarchin in seinen Bann ziehen soll.
Als das Licht im Zuschauerraum erlischt und auf der Bühne angeht, tritt kein Sensenmann vor das Publikum. Nein,
blond, bedrohlich, verführerisch sieht der Mann aus, der da vor
sein Publikum tritt. Ein tödlicher Gigolo. „Mein Auftrag heißt
Zerstören“, mit diesen Worten beginnt er seinen Part. Er spielt
so leidenschaftlich, dass Darsteller und Figur verschmelzen.
Für Kröger ist die Rolle der Durchbruch. Mehr als acht Millionen Menschen werden die Aufführung in den folgenden Jahren sehen, die österreichische Post druckt eine Sonderbriefmarke, sogar in Japan kommt „Elisabeth“ auf die Bühne.
„Es war ein seltsames Gefühl, mit dieser Rolle assoziiert
zu werden. Aber wenn man bei einer Premiere eines Musicals
eine Rolle spielt, ist man von da ab eben für viele das Original“,
sagt Kröger. Aus seiner Stimme klingt das Selbstbewusstsein
von einem, der es weit gebracht hat: von der westfälischen

Uwe Kröger is Germany’s most famous musical
star. Known to many as the phantom or the rocking
pharaoh on the stage, he also hosts the musical
audio program on board Lufthansa

aybe you’ve even sat
next to him on the
plane, next to this man who
seems constantly on the
move: Vienna to Berlin, Stuttgart today, London tomorrow
and back again to Austria.
Maybe you shared a row
while he was heading toward
his next round of applause.
And if you did, this 43year-old with the narrow, blue
eyes and the winning smile
was surely in a hurry. Because at 7:30pm, he has to
be back on the musical stage
that he fills like few Germans
before him. Now he is a singing phantom, now a dancing
cardinal in robes that gleam
flaming red beneath the
lights, now a rocking pharaoh
with a blond, Elvis-style slick.
The man is Uwe Kröger.
If musical theater has ever
produced a German star, it’s
him. He’s been voted German-speaking Musical Performer No. 1 eleven times by
the trade journal Musicals
and has played most of the
big roles: Inspector Javert in
Les Misérables, Cardinal
Richelieu in The Three Musketeers, the leads in Napoleon and Beauty and the
Beast.
The turning point in Mr.
Kröger’s career came on
September 3, 1992 in Vienna. He was 29 at the time
and already a respected artist with a number of shows
under his belt; lead roles, too.
But this particular evening
was different in many ways: It
was the premiere performance of the musical Elisabeth that tells the story of the
Austrian Empress consort
Sissi. Cast in the role of
Death, Mr. Kröger’s job was
to cast a spell on the melancholy monarch.
But when the lights in the
auditorium dimmed and the
curtain went up, it was not a
forbidding figure bearing a
scythe but a slim, blond,
man, menacing yet seductive, who stepped out onto
the stage. A deadly gigolo,
whose job was destruction,
as the opening words of his
part announced. He sang
with such passion, played
with such convinction, that
actor and character became
one and the same. This was
Uwe Kröger’s breakthrough
role. Over eight million people saw Elisabeth in the following years, the Austrian
post office printed special
Elisabeth stamps and the
show even went to Japan.
“It was a peculiar feeling,
being so closely associated
with that role, but when you
play a part at the premiere of
a musical, you become the
original in many people’s
minds,” he says. His voice

stört, dass mancher beim Wort „Musical“ an Kirmeskitsch und
Massenabfertigung von Reisebustouristen denkt? Seine Stimme bleibt ganz ruhig: „Wissen Sie, das ist doch ein Klischee.
Das Musical nimmt den Platz ein, den früher die Oper hatte. Es
ist eher ein gutes Zeichen, wenn ein Thema polarisiert.“
Musical sei höchste Kunst, erklärt er, nicht nur weil die
rasant erzählten Geschichten das Publikum Zeit und Raum vergessen lassen, sondern weil dahinter vor allem harte Arbeit
stecke. Um Schauspiel, Tanz und Gesang auf hohem Niveau
zu beherrschen, Abend für Abend, dafür arbeitet er hart. Jeden
Tag trainiert er im Fitness-Studio, nimmt regelmäßig Gesangsstunden, bevor dann der Vorhang aufgeht. Kein Arbeitstag endet vor 23 Uhr, sechs, manchmal sieben Aufführungen pro
Woche steht er vor seinem Publikum. Die Musical-Maschine ist
ein hochtourig laufender Motor, und Uwe Kröger oft das Herzstück des Apparats.
Mehr noch: Der Job hat aus Kröger eine Art Kulturnomaden gemacht. Denn ein neues Stück bedeutet immer eine
neue Stadt auf Zeit, immer wieder einen Neuanfang. „Man
kommt dann irgendwann in seine Wohnung und denkt: Einen
Tisch zu besitzen wäre schön, oder einen Stuhl.“ Das alles
steht jetzt in seiner Wahlheimatstadt Wien, hier lebt er mit seinem Lebensgefährten, einem amerikanischen Kardiologen.
Hierher kehrt er immer wieder zurück.
Und dann noch dieser Anruf. Thomas Gottschalk wolle ihn
als Kopf einer Jury für eine Casting-Show – Kröger sagte zu.
Im Frühjahr wird er im ZDF zu bewundern sein, vermutlich an
der Seite von Katja Ebstein. Millionen werden sein unmaskiertes, ungeschminktes Gesicht sehen. Uwe Kröger ist unterwegs. Weiter nach ganz oben.
Einen Vorgeschmack auf den Star bekommen Sie an Bord
im Lufthansa Radio, Kanal 30 „Your Favourites“. Uwe Kröger führt als Moderator durchs Programm und präsentiert
seine Lieblingsstücke.

fame: all the way from provincial Westphalia, in fact. Does
it bother him at all that many
people associate the word
“musical” with fairground
hurly burly and the mass processing of coach parties? His
voice remains perfectly calm:
“Oh, that’s just a cliché, and
a pretty old one at that. Musicals now fill the place once
occupied by opera. And anyway, it’s a good sign when a
subject divides peoples’
opinion.”
The musical is the ultimate art, Mr. Kröger goes on
to explain. And not just because the fast-moving stories
make the audience oblivious
to time and space – but because they require you to
maintain a consistently high
standard of acting, dancing
and singing. No working day
ends before 11pm, and he
does six, sometimes seven
shows a week. The musical
machine is very powerful and
in many shows, Uwe Kröger
is the driving force.
The job has turned him
into a kind of cultural nomad,
too. A new musical always
means spending time in a
new city, starting anew. “You
return to your apartment
eventually and think: It would
be quite nice to actually own
a table or a chair.” He now
has both and a whole lot
more in his adopted city, Vienna, where he shares an
apartment with his partner,
an American cardiologist.
This is the place he now returns to after spending
months away on stage.
At least that’s how it was
until a particular phone call
from the popular German
television host Thomas Gottschalk came asking Uwe
Kröger to head the jury of a
casting show.
Mr. Kröger agreed. Starting this spring, he will regularly appear in the show on
the ZDF channel along with –
probably – German singer
Katja Ebstein. Millions of
viewers will see his real face
– no masks, no stage makeup. Uwe Kröger is clearly on
the road again – to even
more celebrity.
