März 2012, ab 18 Uhr Die kulturelle Kritik zu Klima, Umwelt und Nachhaltigkeit Ein Abend mit Experten Panel und einer künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung in der Oper „Three Mile Island“ von Andrea Molino ————————————————— Wenn es um den Schutz von Klima und Umwelt geht, ist die Nachhaltigkeit ein viel zitierter Begriff, der selten ausreichend differenziert betrachtet wird. Wie kann Nachhaltigkeit global gefasst werden? Wie stehen wir zu den „common goods“, die nur unabhängig von (politischen) Landesgrenzen gedacht werden können? Welche politischen Konsequenzen sollte ein Ereignis wie Fukushima setzen und auf welche Weise lassen sich internationale Verbindlichkeiten schaffen? Dass Klima und Umweltschutz Themen sind, die auch die Kultur betreffen und nicht länger getrennt betrachtet werden sollten, darüber diskutieren am Donnerstag, den 29. März, um 18 Uhr namhafte VertreterInnen aus Wissenschaft und Politik auf dem Panel „The Cultural Turn and its Practice in the Humanities“. Im Anschluss um 21 Uhr präsentiert das ZKM die Uraufführung von Andrea Molinos szenischer Oper „Three Mile Island“, welche die Reaktorkatastrophe in Pennsylvania von 1979 verhandelt und damit konkret aufzeigt, wie ein einschneidendes Ereignis aus einer kulturellen Perspektive kritisch beleuchtet werden kann. Das ZKM | Karlsruhe versteht sich jenseits seines Ausstellungs- und Veranstaltungsprogramms auch als ein öffentliches Forum für die Begegnung von Wissenschaft, Politik, Kultur und Wirtschaft mit der Zielsetzung, Nutzungsmöglichkeiten und kreatives Potenzial aufzuzei-gen. Beim Panel „The Cultural Turn and its Practice in the Humanities“ fragen ExpertInnen nach der Bedeutung der Kultur innerhalb bereits formulierter dimensionsübergreifender Nachhaltigkeitsziele. Um 2000 legte das Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe eine Studie vor, auf der das so genannte 3-Säulen-Modell der nachhaltigen Entwicklung basiert, mit dem auch die Vereinten Nationen operieren. Seine Dimensionen umfassen ökonomische, ökologische und soziale Nachhaltigkeit. Seit einiger Zeit stellt sich die Frage, nach einer potenziellen Erweiterung dieses Modells um eine vierte Säule – 2 || 8 die kulturelle Perspektive. Die in Karlsruhe maßgeblich angestoßene Diskussion von damals wird damit am ZKM in Karlsruhe fortgeschrieben. Vorgestellt wird eine im Auftrag der IAES entwickelte Satellitensoftware (EDO) des Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) - gedacht als Basis für einen Internationalen/Europäischen Gerichtshof gegen Umwelt-verbrechen - welche die Gesamtheit an Umweltschäden sichtbar und damit ihre sozialen und kulturellen Konsequenzen erst belegbar macht. Ziel des Panels ist gemeinsam mit allen ExpertInnen eine Empfehlung in Form einer Initiative für die UN-Konferenz „Rio plus 20“ im Juni dieses Jahres zu erstellen. Es werden mögliche Formen von Verbindlichkeiten der Völkergemeinschaften verhandelt, die sich als ein Plädoyer für ein Post-Kyoto-Protokoll verstehen. Wie essentiell Kultur als gesellschaftlicher, völkerverbindender Pfeiler ist, wird im folgenden Abendprogramm deutlich. Andrea Molinos szenische Oper „Three Mile Island“ setzt sich mit dem Störfall, der sich am 28.3.1979 im Kernkraftwerk Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania (USA), ereignete, auseinander und bietet damit einen unmittelbaren Zugang zu den komplexen Themen Klima, Umweltschutz und Nachhaltigkeit. Es zeigt sich, wie wichtig es ist, dass diese Diskussion demokratisch, für alle gleichermaßen zugänglich geführt wird und damit ein noch größeres Bewusstsein für die Dringlichkeit dieser Themenfelder entsteht – der Diskurs muss jedoch nicht zwangsläufig wissenschaftlich erfolgen, wie der Opernabend zeigt. Der Unfall von „Three Mile Island“ 1979 war der bis dahin schwerste Unfall in einem amerikanischen Atomkraftwerk. Derart gravierend, dass seitdem keine neuen Atommeiler mehr in den Vereinigten Staaten gebaut wurden. Die jüngste Katastrophe von Fukushima hat auch den Unfall von Three Mile Island wieder ins Gedächtnis gerufen. Mit modernsten Mitteln erzählt das Stück in Form eines multimedialen szenischen Konzertes Leben und Wirken von Professor Ignaz Vergeiner. Der österreichische Meteorologe hatte in den 1990er Jahren vergeblich die Massenklage von 3000 mutmaßlichen Betroffenen gegen den Betreiber und die Regierung von Pennsylvania mit einem einmaligen Gutachten unterstützt, in dem er die bestrittene Verbreitung von Radioaktivität anhand präziser Daten nachweisen konnte. Kurz vor seinem Tod hat er sein Wissen um die wahren Folgen des Unfalls in mehrstündigen Interviews einem Freund, dem deutschen Journalisten Karl Hoffmann, vor laufender Kamera anvertraut. Audiovisuelle Originalaufnahmen – entstanden in den USA – mischen sich mit komponierten Elementen, reale und virtuelle Darstellungen wechseln sich ab. Durch die integrative Dramaturgie entsteht eine organische und intermediale Auseinandersetzung der verschiedenen künstlerischen Elemente: Klang, Bild, Video, Sprache, Text und Aktionen der Darsteller. Die Funktion eines traditionellen Bühnenbildes wird von einer interaktiven intermedialen Installation übernommen. In what ways can sustainability be grasped in global terms? What is our attitude to those “common goods” which can only be thought of independently of (political) borders? What political consequences must be drawn from an event such as Fukushima, and in what ways can international commitments be set up? That climate and environment are both themes relevant to culture and that should no longer be considered apart from one another, are issues which will be taken up and discussed by noteworthy representatives from science and politics on the panel “The Cultural Turn and its Practice in the Humanities” on March 29, at 6 p.m. This will be followed at 9 p.m. by a ZKM premiere show of Andrea Molino’s scenic opera “Three Mile Island”. The opera thematizes the reactor disaster in Pennsylvania in 1979, specifically showing how cultural perspectives can shed light on a drastic event. In addition to its exhibition and events program, the ZKM | Karlsruhe sees itself as a public forum for the encounter between the sciences, politics, culture and economics the objective of which is to exploit possible areas of application and creative potential. In the panel “The Cultural Turn and its Practice in the Humanities” experts will be inquiring into questions relating to the significance of culture within already formulated, cross-dimensional objectives of sustainability. In 2000, the Research Center Karlsruhe submitted a study on which the so-called 3pillar model of sustainable development is based, and with which the United Nations also operate. Its dimensions embrace economic, ecologic and social sustainability, and the question as to a potential extension of this model with a fourth pillar – the cultural perspective – was presented already some time ago. The discussion, originally decisively initiated in Karlsruhe, will thus be updated at the ZKM. A satellite software (EDO) developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and commissioned by the IAES – conceived as the basis for a new International/European Criminal Court for Crimes against the Environment - will be presented; it renders clearly visible the totality of environmental damage, only then making social and cultural consequences verifiable. Together with the experts, arthist.net - netzwerk für kunstgeschichte im h-net 6 || 8 the panel’s objective is to compile a recommendation, in the form of an initiative, for the UN conference “Rio plus 20” by June of this year. Possible forms of commitment between members of the international community, understood as a plea for a post-Kyoto protocol, will be negotiated. Just how essential culture as pillar of international social understanding is becomes evident in the following evening program. Andrea Molino‘s scenic opera “Three Mile Island” investigates the incident that occurred on March 28, 1979 at the nuclear power plant Three Mile Island, in Pennsylvania (USA), and provides direct access to the complex themes of climate, environmental protection and sustainability. The findings show how important it is that this discussion is carried out democratically, equally accessible to all, and that a heightened aware-ness of the urgency of these thematic fields emerges – whereby, as the opera evening shows, the discourse does not necessarily have to be carried out at an academic level. The accident at “Three Mile Island” in 1979 was the worst of its kind to have occurred at the North American nuclear power plant. The seriousness of the incident was such that since then no new nuclear reactor has been built in the United States. The most recent catastrophe in Fukushima has once again evoked the memory of the incident at Three Mile Island. By way of cutting-edge modern resources in the form of a multi-medial scenic concert, the piece narrates the life and influence of professor Ignaz Vergeiner. During the 1990s, the Austrian meteorologist had sought in vain to support the class action by 3000 persons, presumed to have been affected, against the operators and the government of Pennsylvania with an expert report. With this and by means of precise data, he was able to prove the contested spread of radioactivity. Shortly before his death, he confided his knowledge of the true effects of the accident to German journalist and friend, Karl Hoffmann, in several hours of filmed interviews. Original audiovisual recordings – taken in the United States – combined with composed elements, alternate with real and virtual presentations. An organic and inter-medial critical examination of the various artistic elements emerges through the integrative dramaturgy: sound, image, video, language, text and actions carried out by the performer. The function of a traditional stage design is adopted from an interactive, inter-medial installation.
