Modal Auxiliaries are sometimes also
called helping verbs.
Look at the sentences below and tell me
difference in each sentence.

Underline the modal auxiliaries in the

Modal Auxiliaries help set the mood of a
particular sentence in which they occur.
As you can see the meaning or “mood”
in each of these sentences is different .
Notice however, that the word order
remains the same .
Let’s look at the word order in the
German sentences below. In what
position is the Modal? What else do you
notice?

The modal auxiliary is always in second
position and the main verb is at the end
of the sentence in the infinitive form. The
modal auxiliary is conjugated just like the
main verb, e.g. based on the subject in
the sentence.
When forming a question using a
modal auxiliary it takes the position of
the main verb.
Form a question based on this statement.
