Task
Having already consulted a British youth magazine about a relationship problem,
now write to a German magazine so that you can compare the advice.
Write the German letter in at least 200 words. You could include:
 an explanation of who the relationship is with.
 a description of past events that illustrate how the relationship has gone wrong.
 reference to a coming event (e.g. a holiday) which makes the problem
particularly acute.

Was kann ich machen? Ich habe ein Problem mit meinem Stiefvater. Er liebt
meine kleinen Stiefschwestern, aber er hasst mich. Ich muss immer sehr viel zu
Hause helfen, weil ich älter bin und weil ich ein Mädchen bin. Ich komme gut mit
meiner Mutter aus und ich liebe sie, aber sie versteht mich nicht.
Letzten Samstag musste ich zu Hause babysitten. Ich habe meinen Freund
eingeladen, aber mein Stiefvater war dagegen. Er ist zu streng.
In drei Wochen soll die ganze Familie nach Devon in den Urlaub fahren. Ich will
das aber nicht. Ich bin so unglücklich mit meinem Stiefvater.

Examiner’s commentary
This text communicates simple but clear messages consistently and without
ambiguity. Simple opinions are expressed and there is some variety of structure,
including reference to present, past and future events. These are some of the key
features of a grade C performance in writing.
Simple opinions are expressed: “er hasst mich”, “Er ist zu streng”, “Ich bin so
unglücklich mit ...”.
Reasons are given: “weil ich älter bin und weil ich ein Mädchen bin”.
Past events are referred to in the second paragraph. To be noted are: “Ich habe
meinen Freund eingeladen” and “mein Stiefvater war dagegen” - a perfect tense
with a tricky separable verb and then a simple imperfect of ‘sein’.
The future is referred to by using “In drei Wochen soll …”, “ich will …”.
Time phrases with inversion of subject and verb are good grade C indicators:
“Letzten Samstag musste ich”, “In drei Wochen soll …”.
A correct comparative adjective “älter” is good at this level.
