IMPERFECT TENSE Imperfect Tense Definition: it is a past tense used to say what you used to do or to narrate a string of past events. E.g.: Als Kind hatte ich lange Haare und ich spielte oft Tennis As a child I used to have long hair + I often used to play tennis. N.B. : it’s not used as often as the PERFECT TENSE How to identify it: only 1 verb (not habe + ge-t) (a bit like: “I ate”, rather than “I have eaten” Identify IMPERFECT TENSE Which of these are imperfect tense? Ich war I was, Ich fand Ich dachteI found, Ich habe gespielt Ich dachte I thought, PLEASE NOTE Ich war fand Es gab there was/were, IchTHESE Ich wollte musste I wanted Ich to, wollte MEANINGS Ich bin IN gegangen Ich musste had to, MARGIN Ich Ihatte IchYOUR spielte Ich konnte I could, Ichhatte konnte I had, Ich denke Ich mache Ich I played, Ich liebte Es gab Ich spielte Ich liebte I loved. Identify IMPERFECT TENSE Ich war Ich fand Ich dachte Es gab Ich wollte Ich musste Ich konnte Ich hatte Ich spielte Ich liebte Irregulars! Others: blieb/fuhr/ging/kam (typically a vowel change in the stem + no verb ending!) Modal verbs! Modal Rule: still needs its infinitive at the end (not a past participle at the) Regulars! Others: machte/hörte/tanzte (regular endings on next slide) Here are the REGULAR ENDINGS: Add them onto the stem: spielen Ich hatte Ich spielte Ich liebte ich du er/sie/es/man wir ihr sie -te -test -te -ten -tet -ten Als ich Kind war,..
